8 Tips to Navigate Slippery Winter Conditions Safely | Health content ...

An expert from the Loyola University Health System offers tips to help everyone ? but especially those over 50 years old ? retain their balance when stepping outside in slippery winter weather to prevent injuries from falls.

About a million people experience falls every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and approximately 20,000 people die annually due to fall-related injuries. Now that winter weather has arrived in full force and many parts of the country are experiencing snowy and icy conditions, play it safe when stepping outside to avoid painful and dangerous falls.

Mike Ross, author of The Balance Manual and exercise physiologist at Gottlieb Center for Fitness, part of Loyola University Health System, explained that some of the unavoidable bodily changes that occur as we age may affect personal safety. As we grow older, our balance deteriorates due to the weakening of muscles and change in sensory perception, especially in the ear structure. Equilibrium, or balance, is largely determined by the inner ear and the brain.

?As we age, our eardrums often thicken and the bones of the middle ear and other structures are affected. It often becomes increasingly difficult to maintain balance,? Ross said. ?Aging also breaks down cells in the nervous system, which can often result in a delay in reflexes that can lead to susceptibility to injury.?

Ross offers the following eight tips to navigate slippery winter conditions safely this year:

  1. Check your footwear. Examine your shoes and boots for traction and determine whether it?s time for a new pair. Better traction can help keep you more stable on icy surfaces.
  2. Keep a shovel and salt in your house. Don?t keep these useful tools in the garage or other out-of-the-way spot ? you want them close at hand so you can clear your sidewalk, porch and steps.
  3. Check the railings. Examine the railings leading up to your front door to ensure they're sturdy and capable of supporting you if you slip.
  4. Bring a cell phone when you leave the house. If you fall, it may be hard to get up. Carrying a cell phone whenever you go out can bring peace of mind.
  5. Slow down. Allow extra time if it's slippery out. When you rush, you end up pushing the limits of your sense of balance. And remember: It?s better to be a little late than rushing and causing a fall.
  6. Ask for help. If you have to walk across an icy sidewalk or parking lot, try to find a steady arm to lean on. Most people are happy to help someone navigate a slippery walkway, so you just have to ask.
  7. Have a plan. When you are going out, ask yourself, "If I slipped and fell here, what would I do?"
  8. Strengthen your legs. Strong leg muscles can help you steady yourself if you slip. And if you do fall, they make it a lot easier to get back up. You should exercise your legs regularly to keep them strong. Try walking up and down your stairs repeatedly or do a set of 10 squats out of a chair a couple of times per week.

?Many falls can be successfully avoided or the impact minimized by applying a few basic strategies,? Ross concluded.

New laws intend to stop online exploitation

The Obama administration has announced changes in the regulations that protect children under 13 who use the internet. The new laws intend to improve data protection and stop companies from exploiting the information children post on social media, gaming and networking sites.

The new laws will take effect in July, and will amend the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998, with regulations that surround cellphones, tablets, networking services and mobile applications.

Advertisers and marketers can reap significant profits by gaining information on the activities of child consumers, but at present, the Federal government believes businesses have too much access to information that could give away physical location, contact data or names of persons under 13. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has continued with plans to add new privacy rules for children, despite claims that it would stifle growth in the tech industry.

Small businesses developing and distributing children's software, much of which is social in nature or includes social gaming components, also occasionally syphon data to third parties operating on these applications. When a child enters a name and email address for a real-life friend with whom he or she would like to play mobile games, some of this information is often taken away and used for advertising or marketing purposes. New regulations would make this activity illegal in order to improve privacy protection as well as messaging security.

According to Research and Markets, changes in payment technology are also making it easier to purchase products on mobile devices. Whereas before, a child would have to walk up to a cash register, a son or daughter who gets a hold of a parent's credit card could wreak havoc on a smartphone or tablet. New laws may also extend to purchases on mobile devices, making it harder for children to buy online goods without parental consent.

'White Christmas': People create holiday magic for others

The movie 'White Christmas' isn't just a holiday classic because Bing Crosby croons that title song. Check it out for an example of a holiday movie with no supernatural elements, no sudden miracles ? just people making something kind of magic happen for others.

Many classic stories feature otherworldly behavior and happenings, such as the title character flying through the air with the other reindeer in "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" or an angel coming down to Earth to help George Bailey realize he wants to live in "It?s a Wonderful Life." The holiday season, it seems, is as much about blurring the line between our world and others as it is about a pine tree or a menorah.

But in my holiday movie viewing, I?m also a fan of movies where average, everyday people make something kind of special happen for others ? and that?s why I love the movie "White Christmas."

Now, I think this movie is a pretty acknowledged classic, but I also come from a family that owns the 1938 movie "Bringing Up Baby" on both VHS and DVD, so I recognize that our film preferences may run a little older than most. In case younger generations aren?t familiar with the 1954 film, "White Christmas" follows Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby, he who you have heard singing the title song on the radio a million times) and Phil Davis?(Danny Kaye), buddies who served under the same general during World War II. At the end of the war, they begin performing together in nightclubs and get fairly famous. They meet two sisters who also work in entertainment, and the four head up to Vermont to a scenic inn. But ? surprise! ? the inn is run by Bob and Phil?s old general, who?s not doing too well financially and is feeling a bit left behind by life.?

Spoilers ahead if you haven?t seen the movie??

Kindhearted Bob and Phil hatch a plan to get as much of their regiment up to the inn as possible on Christmas Eve to show the general he?s not forgotten. They manage to keep him in the dark, and ? well, try not to get a tear in your eye when the general rounds the corner and encounters a room full of men who used to be under his command and have traveled miles to see him and show him how much he meant to them. His struggle not to cry is enough to get me and most of my female relatives blubbering.

It?s a 1950s musical and there?s a lot of songs ? including the lilting lullaby "Count Your Blessings (Instead Of Sheep)" ? which I find charming and fun, but then, I?m a musical fan. If you?re not as much into the song-and-dance, go get a snack or something while Danny?s tap-dancing, because the end is worth it.

I?m all for Christmas miracles and ghosts coming back to show misers how much they?re missing in life and nutcrackers turning into fairy princes. But sometimes human-made magic is the best kind of all.

A Yankee?s Thoughts on Dallas' Winter Weather: Texas Isn?t Cold

FIRST PERSON | DALLAS -- "Dallas feels like Rochester!"

That was the friendly greeting I received on the way into work this morning. I was wearing my college hoodie from the University of Rochester, so the reference to Rochester, N.Y., was understandable. However, let me correct Dallas residents' perception of their cities winters. Dallas is not like Rochester.

I come from Syracuse and, in Upstate New York, snow isn't measured in inches. We use feet. In Upstate New York, it's not cold until the snow squeaks beneath your feet -- at around 15 degrees. In Upstate New York, we don't complain about scraping off our cars. We keep ice scrapers in our trunks year-round. In New York, our snow plows are twice as wide as the road. The biggest difference, though, is that in Upstate New York, whether Syracuse, Rochester or Buffalo, we don't see the sun. From about November to March, the sky stays grey.

So, Dallasites, please don't tell me Dallas is like Rochester. Texas is not like New York. It is not cold. If I thought it was cold, then you wouldn't see me in shorts. The snow in Dallas was beautiful -- until it melted when the sun rose. Scraping your car is not the most novel activity in the world; millions of people north of the Mason-Dixon Line do it every winter day. Dallas does not have snow plows. Dallas-Fort Worth has pickup trucks with sand in their beds. Finally, please do not tell me Texas is like New York because I can see the sun down here.

Dead passenger found riding in Berlin underground

DEAR ABBY: While searching for two of my husband's childhood friends, with his knowledge, I believe I may have found a child he doesn't know is his. I'm not positive that the child is his, but the time frame and location indicate that he could be, and there's a strong resemblance to my husband's brother. (I have seen photos on the Internet.) I am curious whether my hunch is correct, but I'm afraid of asking the questions, not knowing how they would be received. My husband is a kind and caring person, a great husband and father. ...

?ISHPES-Bulletin 42 December 2012 15

Sport Psychology in Brazil: Approaches between Psychology and Physical Education

Cristianne Carvalho (Universidade Federal do Maranh?o;?S?o Lu?s; Brasil)

Sport Psychology is considered an emerging practice in Brazil. Turning into one of the eleven specialties in psychology practice, it has relied heavily on the recognition and regulation of the Federal Council of Psychology (Conselho Federal de Psicologia ? CFP; the resolution number 02/01 of the Federal Council of Psychology gives the title of Specialist in Sport Psychology in 2000 ? see www.pol.org.br), since 2000. The following summarizes the doctoral thesis in Social Psychology on the History of Sport Psychology in Brazil at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro ? UERJ).

The study takes place between the decades from 1930 to 1950 because of the lack of information in this period. The first studies in this area began to be of importance in Brazil in the late 1950s, more specifically in 1958, with the participation of Jo?o Carvalhaes in the technical committee of the victorious Brazilian Soccer Team. It is interesting that this actually occurs before the regulation of psychology as a profession in 1962. The Research we developed in the PhD made it possible to find information prior to that period, establishing an embryonic practice of psychology focused on the scope of physical activity inside the first school of Physical Education in Brazil, led initially by the Brazilian Army in Rio de Janeiro in 1930. This finding led to the first journals of Physical Education in Brazil, where it was identified the presence of psychology initiating an approach in the world of Physical Education, what is now called Sports Psychology. Some questions about this construction process and given these facts: how did this integration occur between Physical Education and Psychology? What relation can we find between Sport Psychology today with those early days?

Methodology

In an attempt to construct a narrative about the early history of Sport Psychology in Brazil, much of the contemporary social psychologists agree on the position that all knowledge is constructed from a social production where we all play a role in the process of construction of meaning. Based on constructionism, this view is characterized by questioning the truths guided in the representations of knowledge production, considering object and subject as social constructions at the same level of relationship and interaction. In social psychology this view is developed through the work of Kenneth Gergen, 1973 (

Social Psychology as history), Thomas Iba?ez (1993), Jonathan Potter (1996), Ian Hacking (2001), Lupicinio I?iguez (2004) and Mary Jane Spink (2004) in Brasil, to name a few.

The research method is based on a narrative record that relates the documented evidence collected with the one based on the bibliographic collection found in the first journals of Physical Education in Brazil.

The history of Sport Psychology known in Brazil

Sport Psychology is another branch of psychological knowledge and it is a reflection of its construction as a whole. Therefore, considerations about this knowledge are important to better situate the performers and explain their positions in this narrative.

In the USA, Psychology is based on the study of consciousness, its adaptive function and its evolution in humans. In Central Europe the emphasis was on the relationship between psychiatry and neurology when madness came to be explained as a disease of the mind rather than the nerves. Although such experiments have been significant for the emergence of various psychologies, only in the late nineteenth century in Germany, W. Wundt (1832-1920) and his psychological laboratory (1879) provided the experimental study of psychology in university education. The world turns to control, to measurement, and to classification in all aspects of individual and collective, internal and external to the individual.

According to Soares (2005: 19) ?*?+ the nineteenth century holds a great scientific revolution of the laboratories, industrialization and growth of disciplines and social institutions. *?+?. The scientific and capitalist ideologies take care of the society transforming itself into a large living organism driven by the growing sense of development. Everything can and should be measured, classified, compared, defined and widespread.

Brazil has traveled this path slowly as the institutionalization of psychology as a profession and academic knowledge have only occurred in the second half of the twentieth century (1962).

According to Ara?jo (2006: 102) psychology begins to settle in Brazil ?*?+ mainly by means of applied psychology ? whether in psychiatry or pedagogy with emphasis on psychometrics *?+?, which were strongly influenced by the demand for control and measurement that psychometrics provided, offering an approach between Psychology and Physical Education.

Although there are results in other sports, it is those results obtained through soccer that psychology was able to obtain evidence in the media with the performance of Jo?o Carvalhaes (JC), considered the founder of this area due to his participation in the Brazilian National Soccer Team, World Cup 1958. ISHPES-Bulletin 42 December 2012 16

Besides J. Carvalhaes, other names stand out in the soccer area such as Athayde Ribeiro da Silva and Em?lio Mira y Lopez. Both of them wrote the books ?Psychology and Soccer? and ?Sport Psychology and the preparation of the athlete.? in the 1960s. Since then, Sport Psychology has been developing and acting in other ways, but even 50 years after JC?s important participation in Brazilian soccer, Sport Psychology remains as an unknown field in this world.

History that deserves to be known

To understand those who played roles and the relations present in this construction process it was important to view the initial studies, which began in Brazilian history, in 1930 during the so called Vargas Era (1930-1945). It was a complex moment of great importance in our history due to the political, economic and social developments, but mainly due to the fact of that the Army was the initial promoter of the theoretical space so that Psychology could be discussed, even if occasionally.

Health, hygiene and and education become the primary focus of the state during this period. It is when medicine, the army and physical education ended up meeting. It is during the Get?lio Vargas Era that the first physical education schools in the country begin to appear, along with journals about psychology. The militarization of the body begins in the late 1930?s because

[...] the body is the issue of the moment and it is the center of attention for doctors, educators, engineers, teachers and institutions such as the army, the Church, the schools, the hospitals. Suddenly, we become aware that to think the society over to transform it was necessarily related to taking care of the body as a resource to achieve the whole integrity of the human being [...]. (Lenharo, 1986)

In this direction, the army became an inviting scenario for sport to develop according to such demands involving the notion of control and discipline. The foundation of the School of Physical Education of the Army (Escola de Educa??o F?sica do Ex?rcito ? EsEFEx), established in 1922, as a part of the new army organization in the early decades of the twentieth century, was the starting point of this project for the ideal man for the nation.

In another aspect of controlling bodies, medicine was devoted to combat many popular and mystical practices that served as instruments of cure or beliefs for cure in a social context of treating diseases of the second half of the nineteenth century.

Given this scenario, we find heterogeneous fields as Medicine, Physical Education, Army and Psychology grouping and building new relationships. Psychology is then a propitious area to be and build a new practice focused on physical activity and sports. It is inserted in this context invited by Physical Education to try to interfere in the relationship between mind and body, an old philosophical issue that appears in a new facet. To understand such insertion the research sought to analyze the articles from the first journals of Physical Education that emerged from 1930 to 1960.

Research sources:

1. Educa??o Physica Revista Technica de Esportes e Athletismo / Physical Education ? technical Magazine of Sports and Athletism (1932-1944): the first journal about physical education in Brazil, published twice a year by Companhia Brasil Editora S/A, Rio de Janeiro.

2. Revista de Educa??o F?sica/Journal of Physical Education (1932 to present): created by the School of Physical Education of the Army (EsEFEx) in order to help build the brazilian race. Currently the Army announces sporting activities;

3. Revista Brasileira de Educa??o F?sica/Brazilian Journal of Physical Education (1944-1952);

4. Revista Arquivos/?Arquivos? Journal (1945-1972): designed by the School of Physical Education and Sports (Escola de Educa??o F?sica e Desportos ? ENEFD), established in 1939 as the first upper level school attached to a university, the University of Brazil, now the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro ? UFRJ). It has academic and technical character in its articles.

In the first decades the army, doctors and educators ventured to discuss issues they considered relevant in the world of physical activity. Some themes found in these journals:

?Psychology and Physical Education? (1935): article translated by Am?lia de Oliveira.

?Physical education under the psychological point of view? (1938): published by the 1st Lieutenant Airton Salgueiro Freitas, Instructor of Physical Education and Sports of EsEFEx and coach of the Brazilian team of modern pentathlon in London Olympics in 1948.

?Psychology applied to athletes? (1946) by Inezil Penna Marinho, professor of Metodology at ENEFD.

?Psychological research in the scientific control of sports? (1954/1955) and ?Psychological conditions for the application of quality education to hygiene, physical education and recreation? (1964). Both written by Carlos Sanches Queiroz.

?The importance of psychological research in the scientific control of sporting activities? (1953) ?The need for guidance in the practice of sport? (1962) and ?The contribution of psychology to the sport orientation? (1964) written by Cec?lia Turre?o Stramandinoli. ISHPES-Bulletin 42 December 2012 17

Results

1. The Sport Psychology in Brazil comes from the insertion in Physical Education and Sports Medicine and also by the knowledge focused on strategies to control the body. Physical Education in the decades from 1930 to 1950 included psychology in its journals in an attempt to respond to the demand in the formation of the ideal man for the country.

2. Articles and authors talk about psychology in the world of physical activity in a military environment thirty years before the institutionalization of psychology and twenty years before Carvalhaes?s action in Sport Psychology.

3. Psychology, as a field of knowledge, followed the trend of modernization of equipping itself with tests and techniques able to diagnose and intervene. It produced several specialties including what we call Sport Psychology.

4. Therefore, distinct and apparently opposing realities such as physical activity/psychology, army/psychology, psychology/physical education, mind/body, clearly approach in Brazil in the early twentieth century, initiating the establishment of what now is called Sport Psychology.

Armed guards, locked doors: Schools seek security

A long-dormant national conversation about guns has reignited: some are calling for an assault weapons ban while other feel guns themselves aren't the root of the problem. So far the shootings have sparked several gun buy-back programs and even an anti-gun video organized by big-city mayors ? but the NRA says it's the entertainment industry that is partly to blame. NBC's John Yang reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck and M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

The National Rifle Association?s call to put armed guards in every public school in America has further intensified the debate over how to protect our nation?s children in class, with some districts saying they?re preparing to take just that action and other educators cautioning that doing so sends the wrong message about education.

And short of giving teachers and officers their own guns, administrators across the country are desperate to find a way to keep their pupils safe. Locked vestibules with buzzers, emergency preparedness drills, stronger glass and surveillance cameras are among measures being considered after the massacre last week at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Even before the?NRA?s Wayne LaPierre said Friday that armed police should be placed in schools, guards with guns were posted at all 14 schools in Butler, Pa.

This Sunday on Meet the Press: NRA Chief Wayne LaPierre

The district of 7,500 pupils about 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh had already gone to court to get a judge's approval to have at least one armed retired state trooper in every school. They were in place as classes resumed Monday after the mass shootings Dec. 14 in Newtown, Conn.

"We plan to have that on a daily basis from now on," Superintendent Michael Strutt told NBC station WPXI of Pittsburgh. By the time the next school year begins, every guard in the school system will be armed, he said.

The sense of urgency is undeniable, with a few districts willing to fight fire with fire, as in Butler. Schools in Marlboro, N.J., for example, will have armed officers in place by January, Mayor John Hornik told NBC News on Friday.

After a week of calls for tighter gun restrictions, the National Rifle Association called for putting more armed security officers in the nation's schools and expressed concerns about violence portrayed in video games, movies and music. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

State Sen. Joe Scarnati, a Republican representing northern Pennsylvania, said there was only one important question: "What do we do to protect our kids?"

"If it requires to put armed individuals in our schools to protect our kids, then we need to do that," Scarnati told NBC station WJAC of Johnstown.

But that idea doesn't sit well with other educators, like Tony Scott, superintendent of schools in Bellaire, Ohio, where a local firearms association said it would provide free shooting training to teachers after the Connecticut shootings.

"I just don't believe our teachers signed up for this," Scott told NBC station WTOV of Steubenville, Ohio. "I know I didn't sign up for it."

Ronald Stephens, executive director of the National School Safety Center, a joint project of the U.S. Education and Justice departments, said there's no centralized database tabulating how many school systems have an official armed presence on campus, but he estimated it at 25 percent. He called the NRA proposal "unfeasible."

"We have to ask ourselves what kind of climate we want to create in our schools. Do we want our school campus to look like the Old West with people having sidearms attached to their hip, or do we want education to happen in a positive way?" Stephens told NBC News. "That's the hard part of this."

Michael Smerconish, author Steve Siebold and David Corn of Mother Jones debate the NRA's idea that more guns and armed teachers would curb gun violence.

Some administrators are looking elsewhere for solutions.?After years of unlocked front doors and casual conversations about someday increasing security in the small school district of New Hartford, Conn., Superintendent Philip O'Reilly isn't wasting another minute.

Fearing a repeat of the tragedy in nearby Newtown, O'Reilly is planning to modify the district's school buildings so they each have a small, locked vestibule between the main entrance and the building's interior, which will hold visitors for screening.

O'Reilly wouldn't give the cost of these new entryways, but he said the money must be found.

"Cost is no longer the priority. Keeping kids safe is the priority," he said.

In some cases, parents are leading the charge.

"I've had superintendents and headmasters who have been fighting for a year or two trying to do this, and the parents have been fighting them hand and fist because they didn't understand, and now the parents are coming to the school officials saying, 'Why aren't you?'" said Michael Dorn, executive director of Safe Havens International, a nonprofit group based in Georgia that helps schools improve their crisis preparedness.

Michael Dorn of Safe Havens International relays tips on how schools and parents can keep kids safe.

Security experts recommend that school districts start with a security assessment. Because changing entryways or installing security cameras can be expensive, these experts said school systems need to figure out exactly what their biggest shortcomings are before plowing ahead.

"The number one request [schools have been asking for since Newtown] is to conduct a security assessment. We look at everything, from your written practices to the physical security devices and emergency plans," said Paul Timm, president of Illinois-based, school security consulting firm RETA Security.

He said his recommendations usually fall in two main areas.

"There are two categories that protect people better than anything else: access control, which includes a locked vestibule, running a closed campus, visitor management procedures; and communications.

Do we have public address systems, do we have telephones that are outfitted with emergency dialing instructions, do we have two-way radios?" Timm said. "Those two areas, more than cameras, more than metal detectors, more than burglar alarm systems, protect people."

Locked vestibules can literally stop an intruder in his or her tracks. As administrators have become more concerned about security, many schools have restricted access to just one main entry point in the hope of doing that, Timm said.

Another solution for safety-proofing schools: bullet-resistant glass. Timm recently helped a school in Hastings, Minn., replace all the tempered glass in the building with laminated glass after a student brought a gun to school, and the total cost was about $3,500.

But such a low dollar figure for security fixes is rare.

"A large percentage of our schools are not designed well for any of these things. Sometimes, something simple can be $5 million," Dorn said.

Federal funds for school safety ? the Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) project ? were eliminated in March 2011. Now the money must come from local taxpayers.

"There's not much in the budget for security at all. I want to say that before Columbine, not many schools had a line item for security in their budget," Timm said.

One security measure that doesn't come with a hefty price tag is running drills with teachers, students and administrators for various scenarios.

"It prepares us to make life-and-death situations more quickly," Dorn said. "They have an opportunity do something like lock a door, move kids out of a classroom, and [if] for various reasons don't take that action, our casualty rate doubles or triples. The human brain works faster than my laptop to make those life-and-death decisions, but only if you've had the exposure to prepare you."

Andrew Mach of NBC News contributed to this report.

The manufacturer of a children's backpack designed to stop bullets says sales have skyrocketed in the wake of the Newtown massacre. But are some parents overreacting? KPRC's Courtney Zavala reports.

FBI question Benghazi consulate attack suspect

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? After months of asking, agents from the FBI questioned the only known suspect in the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that killed four diplomats, the suspect's Tunisian lawyer told The Associated Press Saturday.

Ali Harzi, a Tunisian, was detained in Turkey and extradited to Tunisia in October where authorities have said he is "strongly suspected" of being involved in the attack.

His lawyer, Anwar Oued-Ali, added that Harzi was also questioned about an attack on the U.S. embassy in Tunisia, a few days later, suggesting the American authorities are looking into if there is a connection between the two attacks.

The Sept. 11 assault by armed men in the Libyan city of Benghazi killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stephens and three other American diplomats. Members of an Islamist militia, Ansar al-Sharia are suspected in the strike, but there has been little progress in the Libya-based investigation into the attack.

A few days later, a mob attacked the U.S. embassy in Tunis, destroying property and an American school in the area, resulting in four deaths. The attack was believed to be instigated by a local group also called Ansar al-Sharia, but it is unclear if it is connected to the Libyan organization.

In early November, Republican senators Lindsey Graham and Saxby Chambliss announced that Tunisia had agreed to allow the FBI to interview Harzi, but it took another month and a half to organize the interview due to legal questions over any infringements on Tunisian sovereignty.

In the end, three FBI investigators using a Moroccan translator posed questions to Harzi for three hours through the Tunisian judge presiding over the case.

Harzi's defense team was not allowed to attend the questioning on the grounds that he was being interviewed as a "witness" rather than a defendant.

Harzi is being charged by the Tunisians for "membership in a terrorist organization." Harzi denies the charges.

Gangnam Style becomes first YouTube video to hit one billion views -- the Mayans were right after all

Congratulations -- you've survived the end of the world! As you must have heard by now, the apocalypse warnings were absurd and your life is set to continue unchanged... or is it? PSY's Gangnam Style, which exhausted all entertainment value long before its popularity began spiraling out of control, has just become the first YouTube video in history to clock up a billion views (yes, you read that right... a billion). We can only assume from this that the Mayans were right, and that the world is soon to descend into anarchy and chaos at the realization that PSY is basically the most important person in internet media, ever. We recommend locking your doors and prioritizing your perishables -- when you start hearing a faint hum in your head, and feel your wrists being drawn together against your will, you'll know its starting.

Russia: Syrian chemical weapons under control

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's foreign minister says the Syrian government has consolidated its chemical weapons in one or two locations amid a rebel onslaught.

Sergey Lavrov says Russia, which has military advisers training Syria's military, has kept close watch over its chemical arsenal. He says the Syrian government has moved them from many arsenals to just "one or two centers" to properly safeguard them.

U.S. intelligence says the regime may be readying chemical weapons and could be desperate enough to use them. Both Israel and the U.S. have also expressed concerns they could fall into militant hands if the regime crumbles.

Lavrov also told reporters on a flight from an EU summit late Friday that countries in the region had asked Russia to convey an offer of safe passage to President Bashar Assad.

Instagram's PR Disaster Shows That Businesses ... - Business Insider

Instagram.com/KimKardashian

A huge variety of people, from celebrities to average users, went into collective uproar about the change in Instagram's terms of service, to the point where CEO Kevin Systrom made a public statement and is planning to release updated language for its terms.

This is particularly notable because nobody really reads terms of service. When they change, they're either ignored, or misunderstood to the point that people think posting a disclaimer on their Facebook walls will prevent the company from using their data.

The reaction highlights how much people use and care about Instagram, but it also points out a huge trend in people's attitudes that will affect corporate strategy for years to come.

People are increasingly aware that what makes many digital businesses valuable is the personal data and content they upload. And they've seen this trend over and over again when businesses go public or get bought out and attempt to monetize the data.

Increasingly?and Instagram's PR crisis will only accelerate this?people are on the lookout for companies that change their terms of service or become increasingly intrusive in the way they go about it.

An acquisition of a favorite company has become a cue to watch it closely.?

In addition to figuring out how to make money, companies will have to be strategic about how they disclose what they're doing to account for the reaction to those efforts. Had Facebook and Instagram, for example, consulted its users about the language or content of their new terms of service, they might have avoided the whole thing.

Being sneaky just won't work.

How to tell if a man is ready for a relationship | eHarmony ...

Are you dating a man but finding it hard to tell if there is any real potential for a relationship? It is not always evident from what a man says so here are some other signs to look out for;

All men are different, as are all relationships, but the question on the minds of women when they are dating a man is often ? ?Is he ready for a relationship?? This is a vital question but not one you necessarily want to ask outright in case you seem too pushy.

Time and attention

Time and attention are the cornerstones of a developing relationship as opposed to casual dating. A man who is serious about getting to know you and working towards a commitment will make time to be in regular contact and to see you whenever possible ? he will start conversations and take the initiative when arranging dates and opportunities to get to know you better.

This investment of time will not wane after the relationship becomes sexual ? if anything he will want to spend more time with you ? someone who isn?t serious will often lose interest after they have succeeded in having sex and their attention may move onto the next challenge.

Although it is important to understand that sometimes a man will be busy you should know that he would make time for you if he could and you are up there on his list of priorities. If he won?t give you his time, don?t waste too much of yours on him.

Attention when he is with you is also a key factor in establishing his intentions ? does he listen to you and take on board things that you tell him? Does he turn his phone off and make you feel that for the time you are together he is really present?

Intimacy

Emotional intimacy is established when two people share their inner feelings, dreams, hopes and fears. Men are not always great at connecting on an emotional level but if a man is serious about developing a relationship with you he will normally overcome his natural reservations and let down some of the boundaries around sharing his emotions. He may talk to you about his childhood, past relationships and aspects of his life that are troublesome ? he will open up to you because he trusts that you will understand him and not judge him ? he is emotionally mature and not afraid to show his vulnerability as well as his strengths. One of the most intimate times for a man is after sex ? if he wants to cuddle up and talk rather than roll over and fall asleep then he is much more engaged than if he were just casually dating you.

Affection

Physical affection is more than just having sex but some women mistake a man?s sexual attention for serious intentions of a long term relationship ? it isn?t necessarily so. Showing affection outside of the bedroom, in ways that don?t necessarily lead to sex ? hugging, kissing, holding hands etc ? gives a much stronger indication that he is ready for a relationship.

The company he keeps

Men usually spend their time with people whose values they share. To tell if he is ready for a relationship look at his friends ? are they settled down with wives and families or are they committed bachelors dedicated to playing the field and enjoying the single life? Most men will have a combination of friends but over time you will see where his strongest attachments are and whose values he is closest to.

There is little point getting serious about someone who you see has only the ?potential? to be a good partner but who isn?t there yet ? you need to accept them as they are now rather than what you think they could be in the future with some gentle nudging in the right direction.

The past

The strongest indication that a man is ready for a relationship is that he has made peace with his past including previous relationships. This will be apparent because he will not be bitter or cynical about women, commitment or relationships. He will have the ability to look at what happened objectively and see his own mistakes as well as those of his exes ? his mother ? or women in general.

He will be more interested in getting to know you as an individual and exploring the relationship between you than in comparing you to women he has met in the past and judging you on that.

Why Leah Cohen Won't Cook Vietnamese Food - The Braiser

Why Leah Cohen Won?t Cook Vietnamese Food In Her Southeast Asia-Inspired Restaurant

Vietnamese food is?serious business. We pity the fool who tries to attempt cooking Vietnamese food in a restaurant without fully?knowing its mysteries and secrets. Can?t tolerate fish sauce? Don?t understand the necessity of Ch? l?a?in everyday life, or what the hell ?n?u n??c d?a?is? Too scared to drink bear bile or cobra liquor? Too bad. True Vietnamese cuisine violently rejects the weak and the ignorant, which is why Leah Cohen wisely didn?t try incorporating its dishes into her new restaurant Pig and Khao.

After her stint on Top Chef, where she took a lot of flack for doing that thing with that guy,?Cohen wisely decided to spend some time away from the States and backpacked across Asia, setting up restaurant?stages?in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. One place she couldn?t get restaurant experience, however, was in Vietnam, largely due to the language barrier.

So she improvised. ?I took a bunch of cooking classes,? she said to Food Republic, ?and traveled literally from the south all the way up north, stopping in six or seven different regions.? But even though she took ?intense? cooking classes throughout the country, she?s still not ready to cook anything from the motherland: ?I don?t think I feel as comfortable in Vietnamese food, just because I didn?t cook in restaurants.?

(Side note: we?ll give credit for Leah understanding that the city of?Hu? is culinarily boring apart from Bun bo hue.)

As for now, there?s only one Vietnamese-ish dish on the menu at Pig and Khao: ?grilled squid with pomelo, pomegranates, crispy shallots, rice powder and Vietnamese nuoc cham dressing.?

Getco to buy Knight Capital for $1.4 billion

(Reuters) - Knight Capital Group Inc , which suffered a near-fatal trading error in August, said it will be acquired by electronic trading firm Getco Holdings Co in a deal valued at $1.4 billion in cash and stock.

The deal seals a whirlwind five months for Knight, which executes about 10 percent of U.S. equity trading volume.

The company was rescued by a group of investors led by Jefferies Group Inc and including Chicago-based Getco who injected $400 million after errant software sent millions of unintentional orders in the opening 45 minutes of the U.S. trading day on August 1.

Knight and Getco will combine to form a new publicly traded company. Knight shareholders other than Getco will have the right to elect either $3.75 per share in cash or one share of common stock in the new business.

The offer represents a 13 percent premium to Knight's closing stock price of $3.33 on Tuesday. It is also a 51 percent premium to Knight's closing price on November 23 when reports surfaced that the company was looking for buyers.

"The transaction provides near-term certainty in the form of cash," Knight Chief Executive Thomas Joyce said in a statement.

Sources told Reuters on Tuesday that Getco was poised to buy Knight after sweetening its offer to beat out rival Virtu Financial LLC.
