Yasamina Kabisch is a Zumba and Capoeira instructor and personal trainer at At One Fitness and Muay Thai School USA, NoHo?s favorite fitness center among locals. Three years ago, Yasamina Kabisch bought a one way ticket to Los Angeles for a premiere of a salsa film. In her hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan, she learned how to salsa dance from going out to the local salsa club. As her skills increased, so did her desire to learn more and to start competing. She traveled to larger cities around her area to perform and compete. In hopes to continue pursuing her love of performing, she had planned to move out to Chicago. Instead, a trip to California turned into a new chapter of her life.
How did you start working at At One Fitness and Muay Thai School USA?
A trainer at At One Fitness over heard me brain storming different career options with my friend on Lankershim Blvd. He approached me stating that I should be a trainer. Honestly I was a bit upset that he had been listening in on our conversation, but this trainer changed my life and helped me get a career started. Shortly after our encounter I became a certified personal trainer. After trying out a few private gyms, my personal training guru introduced me to the owners of At One Fitness and Muay Thai School USA, Robin and Nokweed. The rest is history; I instantaneously fell in love with not just the gym but with the atmosphere. It?s a beautiful full gym with top of the line equipment, a ring and a large back room with punching bags around the perimeter. At One Fitness gives me the opportunity to not only do what I am passionate about, but to share my passion through the classes I teach and through training my personal clients. I get to stay in shape while helping others grow strong healthy bodies. At One Fitness has been described as a hidden diamond in North Hollywood, which is due to the dynamic duo of Robin and Nokweed. Robin comes from a very successful career as a professional dancer and Nokweed is a celebrated Muay Thai champion and an international renowned referee.
As a Personal Trainer, what do you feel people should know about training?
1. Warming up and stretching before a workout and cooling down and stretching after a workout are to very crucial ways to prevent injury. 2. Good posture and alignment while doing exercises is extremely important. 3. While doing an exercise or dance step concentrate on the muscle(s) that you are working. Connectivity between mind and body is essential.
One of the most common questions women ask is how to have toned arms?the ballerina look?
You don?t have to use weights to have toned arms. It can be done 100% through body movement.
Come try? two FREE classes!
FREE Zumba on Saturday, April 7 at 11:15am and
FREE Capoeira class on Sunday, April 8 at 10am.
You will be moving multiple parts of the body at the same time, in turn burning more calories and of course having fun doing so! Sixty minutes of Zumba burns any where from 500-800 calories. Capoeira is a great way to tone your arms, butt and legs. The main movement call ginga is a flowing movement between a lunge, squat and back into a lunge. At the same time your arms are constantly moving. It?s a great burn!
Will exercise alone get you the body you want?
Exercise is important but healthy eating plays a major role in building the physical appearance. I now thank my ?Hippy? parents who taught me to enjoy and prepare healthy foods. One of my favorite quick and easy recipes is a healthy trade off to Mac n? Cheese?.
- Steam Trader Joe?s brown rice pasta
- Pour olive oil over pasta
- Add seasoning of garlic, pepper and my personal favorite- cayenne (increases the metabolism)
- Add Braggs, a liquid amio acid (tastes better then soy sauce)
- Sprinkle nutritional yeast over pasta (1 lb of nutritional yeast has the same amount of protein as a pound of steak. It is also very high in B vitamins and it a great way to replace cheese!)
Did you know that Whole Foods carries a natural Oreo cookie?
My personal favorite is New Man?s Own Organics. It is healthier for you and you get your Oreo cookie fix.
Eating disorders among young women are continuing to increase at an alarming rate.
Do you see eating disorders with the people you train and instruct?
Yes, a large percentage of the women I work with have a negative image of their physical appearance. How can we not? Women are taught from the time they can walk that beauty has a very precise formula, which typically includes being very slender. We are brain washed into thinking that this image is more valuable then our health and happiness. We as women need to find our inner beauty and strength, allowing us to be healthy role models to the younger generations of women. We need to make peace within ourselves and love our bodies! It?s all about being healthy, happy and fit and every body has a different way of showing that!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I have two dreams that I want to realize?one is to be a kick-butt action actress. More precisely I want to show society what a strong, healthy and fit women looks like. Also, I want to stay immersed in the health and fitness world which I feel can go hand and hand. But until that dream is realized, I have the best job here at At One Fitness. The owners Robin and Nokweed have created such a loving environment for both staff and members?I don?t mind waiting a while for that dream to happen.
