Mike Seibel used the time to start a project at one startup, Justin.Tv, spin it out into a new company, called Socialcam, get a few million in funding, and then, this morning, sell the thing to Autodesk for $60 million.

TechCrunch has lots of details about what life will be like for Socialcam after the acquisition, but the jist is this: it will focus on lean product development and operate independently for now.

LinkedIn gets a redesigned homepage

LinkedIn unveiled a?redesigned homepage Monday, one that takes away some of the clutter that was starting to dominate the site.

Call it an update or a badly needed professional makeover, LinkedIn's spiff-up brings a cleaner look and makes it easier to find things. For most people, that means finding other?people ? it's a professional social network, not Pinterest, for goodness sake (although the new look bears some resemblance to Facebook).

LinkedIn product manager Caroline Gaffney said in a blog posting, where you can check out the new look,?that the changes are being rolled out over the next several weeks, so all 161 million users worldwide?won't see them immediately.?

Gaffney wrote that the "simpler and cleaner?design makes it easier to navigate the page and quickly find the updates you?re looking for ? whether that?s a news article your boss has recently shared or it?s to see who has just started a new job."

Users will also will?be able to see "the most important network updates and articles" at the top of their feeds, and there are bigger and better (LinkedIn calls them "richer") visuals for "easier scanning and viewing."

More specifics about the changes are shared on this LinkedIn help page.

That clutter-y Twitter feed is already gone, but that's not at LinkedIn's behest. Twitter sought that change recently?because of its own "evolving platform efforts."?

Are consumers aware that they are drawn to the center when choosing products?

ScienceDaily (July 16, 2012) ? Consumers are more likely to select products located in the horizontal center of a display and may not make the best choices as a result, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

"A close investigation of visual attention reveals that consumers do not accurately recall their choice process. Our findings emphasize the relationship between horizontal location, attention, and choice," write authors A. Selin Atalay (HEC Paris), H. Onur Bodur (Concordia University), and Dina Rasolofoarison (Aston Business School).

Many products are arranged horizontally. For example, rows of snack bars in a vending machine, bottles displaying the beer selection in a bar, or jars of peanut butter on a supermarket shelf. How does this influence which option a consumer will choose?

Using eye-tracking devices, the authors investigated how location influences choices for products as varied as vitamins, meal replacement bars, and energy drinks. Consumers had a tendency to increase their visual focus on the central option in the final five seconds prior to a decision and this determined which option they would choose. Consumers did not accurately recall their choice process and were not aware of any conscious visual focus.

Another study in a retail environment demonstrated that the centrally located item within a product category is chosen more often, even when it is not placed in the center of the shelf or visual field. Consumers would make better choices if they were aware that their attention usually focuses on the center.

"In the context of low involvement choice between frequently purchased products, when choosing between unfamiliar yet equivalent brands, the visual search process and consumer choice are biased toward centrally located options. Being unaware that our attention is focused on the center can lead to poor choices," the authors conclude.

Shelly's Health and Fitness Corner: Feeling Defeated?

A friend of mine posted the other on her Facebook that she felt defeated and my response was, ?we must have had the same day.? I would be lying to say every day was a good day and I have no idea what defeat is. But the reality is, we all feel defeated at times. For me it?s a pride thing and to admit I have been defeated is like agreeing to lying on a bed of nails. But sometimes, I walk away stronger or I learn a lesson. And other times I don?t know what to make of the situation that trying me. But on occasion relief can come from someone you may or may not know. My day of feeling defeated was Friday last week, when just about everything started to go wrong and there was no ?easy or pass? button to push, so the only choice was to deal with it or walk away. But a few things happened that reminded me that I was not completely defeated maybe just being tried? My relief came the day before Friday when I took a Yoga class that was taught by a very talented friend and colleague by the name of Claudia Sanchez who teaches a Functional Yoga class at Fitness 19 in Yucaipa. Besides gaining relaxation and stretching my body past its limits, she also took the class through a visual therapy session. During this time she told us to picture a positive word and believe it in your heart and mind that it applies to you. By the end of the class I had a better sense of control in my life but who would of known I would have needed that the most the next day. I consider Claudia a God sent and a genuine person who cares for others well-being. Most Yoga classes last about an hour long but her class is an hour and 30 minutes that is well spent stretching your body and taking your mind on a visual journey that will help you to tap into your spiritual welling being. God uses people in many ways and he certainly used Claudia that day to prepare me for Friday. When Friday arrived, the day gradually drained me but by the end of the day, my son brought a big smile to my face. He was just as excited, as I was to use my new rowing machine that came via Fedex. In my house getting a new piece of exercise equipment is about as exciting as Christmas is for a kid. I consider exercise my sacred time not only to strengthen by body but a time to myself where I can gain greater strength on the inside.

Grave stones at Union Cemetery vandalized

LACONIA, N.H. -

Police are seeking the public's help finding the people they said vandalized several gravestones at Union Cemetery on Friday.

Laconia police said officers were called to the cemetery at about 7:14 a.m. after a worker discovered that several gravestones had been toppled.

Investigators said the damage took place during the evening or early morning.

The worker told officers that the damage done to the gravestones is about $20,000.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
