How Hurricane Sandy became a snowstorm

Sandy just won't quit. The hurricane-turned-post-tropical-cyclone blew through the Caribbean last week, killing at least 69 people, most of them in Haiti and Cuba. Sandy then churned up the U.S. East Coast, making landfall Monday night in New Jersey and bringing massive floods to Atlantic City, Manhattan and other coastal areas.

And now Sandy is a snowstorm.

Thanks to a collision with cold air flowing from the Arctic, the post-tropical storm (so called because it has moved out of tropical latitudes), has so far dumped 26 inches (66 centimeters) of snow on Redhouse, Md., 24 inches (61 cm) in Alpine Lake, W.Va., and 18 inches (46 cm) in Newfound Gap, Tenn., according to The Weather Channel's Mike Bettes.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued blizzard warnings for high-elevation areas of the central Appalachians, and a swath of lower elevation areas from western Maryland southwest into eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina are under winter storm warnings and advisories. Sandy's remnants could drop up to 3 feet (0.9 meters) of snow in parts of West Virginia and up to 2 feet (0.6 m) in southwestern Virginia and eastern Kentucky before moving into Canada on Wednesday, according to the NWS. The transformation of Sandy from rainstorm to snowstorm is a consequence of a blast of Arctic air that has fed the storm even as it has moved out of tropical waters. Normally, a tropical storm like Sandy would weaken as it moves northward into cooler waters. But a dip in the polar jet stream has fueled the storm, prompting some to call it a "nor'eastercane," a combination of hurricane and nor'easter. Nor'easters are storms driven by frigid polar air. (The moniker "Frankenstorm" also stems from this weather mash-up.)

This polar air on Sandy's western side is turning rain to snow ? a situation that's not entirely unprecedented.

According to the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang, a "snowicane" hit upstate New York and New England in 1804, and 1962's Hurricane Ginny dumped snow in Maine. In 2005, the Category 5 storm Wilma fed into a nor'easter that dropped up to 20 inches (50 cm) of snow in West Virginia and New England.

SME Advisor Middle East ? Managing change in the workplace

Adapting to a constantly changing marketplace and fostering a culture of innovation are two of the biggest challenges facing UAE businesses today, according to biz-ability, the Middle East?s leading corporate leadership training and development company. However, the firm says these are challenges which can be overcome with simple behavioural adjustments by workplace leaders.

To help business leaders make those adjustments, biz-ability has partnered with international training provider ExperiencePoint to bring its proven experiential business simulations on change management and innovation to the region. The workshops,?ExperienceChange and Design Thinker,?equip participants with the skills and processes to implement change and accelerate innovation in unpredictable business circumstances.

Commenting on the company?s new training solutions, Hazel Jackson, biz-ability CEO said, ?Companies usually incorporate ?continuous improvement? in their business strategy but fail to implement this in the workplace. We are often asked by clients about specific behaviours and creative tools that can help leaders and management trainers to apply change quickly and encourage innovation within teams. These simulation-based trainings are a perfect solution for growth businesses as they provide practical guidelines and techniques that can be used in any business scenario.?

At a recent business forum conducted in Dubai by top international business school IMD, experts stressed the need for business leaders in the Middle East to adapt to change quickly in order to remain competitive. Recent research published by McKinsey & Co. suggests that only 30% of change management programmes implemented by global organisations are successful. A major contributor to this high failure rate is the lack of motivating factors that those leading the change should apply to ?unleash latent organisational energy? into the change programme.

Last month, biz-ability invited clients to trial the new training workshops and, following their overwhelmingly positive feedback, the company decided to add ?ExperienceChange? and ?Design Thinker? simulations to its corporate training product portfolio.

Delivered as an in-class exercise or through a single-user online assignment, ?ExperienceChange? is an eight hour exercise that helps leaders and managers explore and apply change in a crisis situation quickly. The programme helps participants to track progress on change initiatives and build behaviours better aligned to tackle changes in the workplace.

Also developed by Experience Point in collaboration with leading innovation and design firm IDEO, Design Thinker is delivered through an intensive four-hour simulation exercise that challenges participants to solve a complex problem, using the techniques and thought patterns of successful innovators. As the name suggests, the activity encourages participants to adopt the ?design thinking? process naturally used to complete extensive design projects in the real world. The process consists of three steps, Inspire, Ideate and Implement?and helps to accelerate innovation by translating abstract ideas into workable solutions.

Impressed with the previews, Al Futtaim has already started using these simulations at its training centre. ?We are currently using the ExperienceChange simulation for executives and leaders in various departments across Al Futtaim and it is producing excellent results. The hands-on hypothetical scenarios provide a safe and practical learning environment, and make our staff better prepared to apply change in real life situations. Leaders who experienced the simulations have said the training is helping them to carefully assess the implications of change in the workplace and use approaches that get the ?buy-in? of their employees before implementing any change,? said Julie Spence, Learning and Development Consultant, Al Futtaim Group.

Engadget goes ghost hunting -- exploring the gadgetry of paranormal investigation (video)

DNP Ghost Hunting with Engadget, exploring the gadgetry of paranormal investigation

The rendezvous point is as nondescript as these things come -- a giant convenience store off the side of the freeway, a big cardboard box out front, filled to the brim with pumpkins in anticipation of the upcoming holiday. Stacey Jones approaches us timidly at first, calling my name in our direction, as two of the crew members puff on cigarettes in the unseasonably frigid air. She'd apparently mistaken some other folks for us a moment earlier, a group of college students in hoodies and baseball caps, and is clearly a little embarrassed by the whole experience. It's the first and last time words like "timid" and "embarrassed" can be accurately applied to a middle-aged mother of an adult son who hunts ghosts for a living in central New York State. Group identified, she announces, "We'd better get going. It'll take about an hour to get there." Disappointing news, after the five it took to get to this roadside rest stop. But we nod and smile and get back in our respective cars.

She's careful not to reveal the location until we arrive, for concerns of privacy. I've studied her a bit online. A self-described "ghost cop," YouTube is littered with videos of her leading camera crews through abandoned hospitals, in search of dead people apparently desperate to relate some bit of information to her. The location, however, isn't as classically horror movie as we'd imagined or hoped in the car ride up. It's quite idyllic, really -- a beautiful 100-year-old building off the side of the road, 200 yards from a truly stunning old church. Outside the front door, a small signboard advertises a monthly waffle breakfast.

Decidedly more ominous are the two graveyards that flank the buildings, with tombstones dating back to the early 19th century, generations of farmers under the ground that may well outnumber residents in this sparsely populated locale. The weather, too, is doing its part to set the scene -- strange, gray clouds hanging low in impossible shapes. "The light," says one of the crew members, as we park and begin the unpacking process. "It's...oversaturated." Sounds seem to travel remarkably well in the cold, crisp, pre-storm air. I step across the road with the show producer, to gather b-roll of 150-year-old headstones, still able to hear every word that Stacey says, as she describes her entry into this strange and oft-maligned world, how her son became possessed by demonic forces on an investigation in a graveyard as a teenager. It's a story she'd recount for the Discovery Channel five years ago, coupled with basic cable dramatizations, portrayed by actors bearing slightly resemblances to their real world counterparts, if you're willing to afford them the advantage of a good squint.

Marketing Campaigns: Creating Email Lists | Travel

If you plan to try and do some Website marketing to promote your business endeavor, you should seriously consider email marketing as at least one tier of your internet marketing campaign. Many businesses avoid email marketing simply because they believe all email marketing campaigns are purely spam. However, this isn?t true and not partaking with this type of marketing could potentially cause your business to lose out on significant amounts of business. By not appealing to prospective customers via email, your business may lose a great deal of business to competitors who are using email marketing campaigns to reach customers around the world. However, the initial step of an email marketing campaign should be creating an email distribution list. This article will talk about some popular alternatives for accomplishing this and should help you to educate yourself regarding what is acceptable and what?s not with regards to email marketing.

Once you have made the decision to start using email marketing to market your business you are likely facing the dilemma of compiling an email distribution list. This is essentially a listing of email addresses to which you?ll email your advertising and promotional materials. One common approach to gain a listing of email addresses would be to buy a list from distributors. However, using this method is not effective in any way and we don?t recommend it. The problem with purchasing an email list is you have no way of knowing whether or not the members of the list might have any interest whatsoever with your services or products. This is very important because since you would like to reach a large audience using your email marketing you also want this audience to generally be members of your overall target market. Whenever you purchase an email list you may be sending your email messages to a few users who might be interested but this really is largely coincidental and isn?t apt to be well received because the message was not solicited.

Online users are extremely quick to delete materials they believe to be spam without even opening or reading the emails. In fact some Internet service providers include spam filters which may automatically delete your emails in case your messages are deemed to be spam. These filters run complex algorithms on the subject heading and content of your message to determine whether or not it is spam and they are quite adept at removing spam. Therefore you take the potential risk of having your email marketing effort turn out to be a complete waste if the majority of recipients never even read or get the message.

A far better approach to create an email distribution list for the email marketing campaign is to ask current customers in addition to interested prospective customers to register using your site to receive additional information and periodic updates about your products and services along with other information which might be of interest in their mind. This provides you with a database of email addresses from current customers along with potential customers who have a genuine interest in your products and services and who definitely are considering learning more about these products and services. Once you have a list of interested customers or prospective customers you are able to send emails or create e-newsletter for distribution to the members of the email list. These documents should include a wealth of valuable information as well as a soft sell pitch for your products and services. This information will be valued by the readers and may even make it possible to persuade them to try your products and services.

You might also choose to include useful links to either your site along with other websites which may be of interest to your readers. Your site content should likewise have a portion which urges the reader to take a specific action including making a purchase or perhaps investigating a product further.

How silver turns people blue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Ingesting silver -- in antimicrobial health tonics or for extensive medical treatments involving silver -- can cause argyria, condition in which the skin turns grayish-blue. Brown researchers have discovered how that happens. The process is similar to developing black-and-white photographs, and it's not just the silver.

Researchers from Brown University have shown for the first time how ingesting too much silver can cause argyria, a rare condition in which patients' skin turns a striking shade of grayish blue.

"It's the first conceptual model giving the whole picture of how one develops this condition," said Robert Hurt, professor of engineering at Brown and part of the research team. "What's interesting here is that the particles someone ingests aren't the particles that ultimately cause the disorder."

Scientists have known for years argyria had something to do with silver. The condition has been documented in people who (ill advisedly) drink antimicrobial health tonics containing silver nanoparticles and in people who have had extensive medical treatments involving silver. Tissue samples from patients showed silver particles actually lodged deep in the skin, but it wasn't clear how they got there.

As it turns out, argyria is caused by a complex series of chemical reactions, Hurt said. His paper on the subject, authored with Brown colleagues Jingyu Liu, Zhongying Wang, Frances Liu, and Agnes Kane, is published in the journal ACS Nano.

"The particles someone ingests aren't the particles that ultimately cause the disorder."Hurt and his team show that nanosilver is broken down in the stomach, absorbed into the bloodstream as a salt and finally deposited in the skin, where exposure to light turns the salt back into elemental silver and creates the telltale bluish hue. That final stage, oddly, involves the same photochemical reaction used to develop black-and-white photographs.

From silver to salt and back again

Hurt and his team have been studying the environmental impact of silver, specifically silver nanoparticles, for years. They've found that nanosilver tends to corrode in acidic environments, giving off charged ions -- silver salts -- that can be toxic in large amounts. Hurt's graduate student, Jingyu Liu (now a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology), thought those same toxic ions might also be produced when silver enters the body, and could play a role in argyria.

To find out, the researchers mixed a series chemical treatments that could simulate what might happen to silver inside the body. One treatment simulated the acidic environment in the gastrointestinal tract; one mimicked the protein content of the bloodstream; and a collagen gel replicated the base membranes of the skin.

They found that nanosilver corrodes in stomach acid in much the same way it does in other acidic environments. Corrosion strips silver atoms of electrons, forming positively charged silver salt ions. Those ions can easily be taken into the bloodstream through channels that absorb other types of salt. That's a crucial step, Hurt said. Silver metal particles themselves aren't terribly likely to make it from the GI tract to the blood, but when they're transformed into a salt, they're ushered right through.

From there, Hurt and his team showed that silver ions bind easily with sulfur present in blood proteins, which would give them a free ride through the bloodstream. Some of those ions would eventually end up in the skin, where they'd be exposed to light.

To re-create this end stage, the researchers shined ultraviolet light on collagen gel containing silver ions. The light caused electrons from the surrounding materials to jump onto the unstable ions, returning them to their original state -- elemental silver. This final reaction is ultimately what turns patients' skin blue. The photoreaction is similar to the way silver is used in black and white photography. When exposed to light, silver salts on a photographic film reduce to elemental silver and darken, creating an image.

Implications for nanosilver

Despite its potential toxicity, silver has been valued for centuries for its ability to kill germs, which is why silver nanoparticles are used today in everything from food packaging to bandages. There are concerns however that this nanoparticle form of silver might pose a unique health threat all its own.

This research, however, "would be one piece of evidence that you could treat nanoparticles in the same way as other forms of silver," Hurt says.

That's because the bioavailable form of silver -- the form that is absorbed into the bloodstream -- is the silver salt that's made in the stomach. Any elemental silver that's ingested is just the raw material to make that bioavailable salt. So ingesting silver in any form, be it nano or not, would have basically the same effect, Hurt said.

"The concern in this case is the total dose of silver, not what form it's in," Hurt said. "This study implies that silver nanoparticles will be less toxic than an equivalent amount of silver salt, at least in this exposure scenario."

The National Science Foundation and the Superfund Research Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences funded the research.

Endorsements flood in, but do voters care?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In one October weekend, Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama each scored a victory from a major newspaper in the all-important state of Florida. On one end, the Tampa Bay Times endorsed Obama, praising him for steady economic progress and sure-footed foreign policy. On the other, the Orlando Sentinel backed Romney, describing him an able and tested leader even as it frowned on his conservative statements about social issues.

Roughly halfway between the two along Florida's coveted, swing-voting I-4 corridor, Lorrie Walker shrugged.

"I don't think it has any influence at all," said Walker, an undecided voter in the town of Lakeland.

A public relations professional, Walker says she gets why both candidates are plugging their endorsements. But she doesn't think it works, primarily because newspaper editorial pages often have a reputation for leaning liberal or conservative. "I discount it, because I think, 'Of course they're endorsing that candidate,'" she said.

As the campaign nears its nail-biting conclusion, both campaigns are trumpeting a flood of newspaper endorsements ? and using them as a stamp of approval in television ads and emails. On Sunday alone, Obama's campaign touted 10 endorsements he picked up, including the Detroit Free Press and the Toledo Blade. Fourteen papers, including the Florida Times-Union and the Richmond Times-Dispatch, gave their nod to Romney.

Nowhere do the candidates crave a newspaper's approval more than in the handful of battleground states that will decide the next president.

Obama minced no words in an interview he gave Tuesday to the Des Moines Register as he courted its support.

"I want your endorsement," Obama said. He added: "You'll feel better when you give it."

They didn't. Instead, on Saturday, the influential Iowa paper backed Romney and said he "offers a fresh economic vision."

But who reads newspapers anymore? For all the energy spent winning and then advertising endorsements, do they make any difference?

"The short answer is no," said Jack Pitney, a political scientist at Claremont McKenna College. "But at this stage in the campaign, you're looking for every edge you can get, even if it's a microscopic edge."

Newspaper circulation has steadily declined in recent years, from almost 47 million per day in 2004 to barely 40 million last year, according to the Newspaper Association of America. While there's little data to show whether voters listen to what their local paper has to say about elections, there is some evidence that endorsements from people ? like celebrities and other politicians ? sometimes have a minor effect. In January, a Fox News poll showed 29 percent of voters would be more likely to vote for a candidate endorsed by former President Bill Clinton. Seventeen percent said the same about former President George W. Bush.

At this stage, campaigns, more than anything, want to establish that momentum is swinging in their candidate's direction. With the debates and the nominating conventions over, that's getting increasingly tough to do. So along with poll numbers and fundraising totals, newspaper endorsements are one way to show that a candidate is benefiting from a burst of enthusiasm.

Even if candidates don't know exactly when an endorsement is coming, they generally have a sense of which way a newspaper is likely to go, based on endorsements from previous years and editorials the paper has written about the candidates earlier in the race. But readers often choose newspapers that match their views about the world, political strategists say, and so it is likely readers are already supportive of the candidate their paper chooses and won't be swayed.

One exception: Endorsements that seem to fly in the face of a newspaper's perceived political persuasion.

"If a traditionally left paper endorses Romney, or a traditionally right paper endorses Obama, that matters, because people go, 'Huh, that's curious,'" said Dan Hazelwood, a Republican strategist.

State and local races are the other scenario where endorsements could play a larger role. Voters often pay less attention to races for Congress, city council or county commissioner than they do about the White House race. With less information to guide their decision, they may turn to a local paper whose reporters they expect have been closely tracking the issues.

"This is what they do for a living, so they usually have the best information," said Cody Slater, a 23-year-old voter in Petrolia, Pa., who is undecided in the presidential race.

Still, not all newspapers want to get their hands dirty by wading into messy political fights. Count the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel among them; The paper announced Friday it had decided to "get out of the political endorsement business."

"This loss of credibility is a high price to pay to conjure a ghost of newspapering past that we have come to believe is of little value today," wrote editorial page editor David Haynes. "Endorsements are a relic of a time when every town had more than one newspaper, of a time long before the wide river of commentary now available to anyone with a smartphone."

New Jersey weather service goes all Jersey in its warning

Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is still hours away from hitting New Jersey, but the warning system is in full effect.

The National Weather Service sent out an all-caps bulletin to help get its dire message across. And the wording certainly caught the attention of the Web for its Jersey-style vibe.

The New Jersey Newsroom described the weather service as forced to "go Jersey" with a five-point bulletin that includes point No. 5: "If you think the storm is over-hyped and exaggerated, please err on the side of caution."

The most dire directive comes with graphic detail for those in the Hurricane Sandy evacuation zone who hesitate to actually leave:

IF YOU ARE RELUCTANT, THINK ABOUT YOUR LOVED ONES, THINK ABOUT THE EMERGENCY RESPONDERS WHO WILL BE UNABLE TO REACH YOU WHEN YOU MAKE THE PANICKED PHONE CALL TO BE RESCUED, THINK ABOUT THE RESCUE/RECOVERY TEAMS WHO WILL RESCUE YOU IF YOU ARE INJURED OR RECOVER YOUR REMAINS IF YOU DO NOT SURVIVE.

The line of argument continues:

1. IF YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO EVACUATE A COASTAL LOCATION BY STATE AND LOCAL OFFICIALS, PLEASE DO SO.

2. IF YOU ARE RELUCTANT TO EVACUATE, AND YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO RODE OUT THE '62 STORM ON THE BARRIER ISLANDS, ASK THEM IF THEY COULD DO IT AGAIN.

SANDY IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS STORM. THERE WILL BE MAJOR PROPERTY DAMAGE, INJURIES ARE PROBABLY UNAVOIDABLE, BUT THE GOAL IS ZERO FATALITIES.

The weather service seems to be taking its cue from Gov. Chris Christie, whose tough-guy warning for last year's Hurricane Irene went viral on the Web. He told New Jersey residents remaining on the Jersey shore,"Get the hell off the beach. Get out. You're done."

(AP Photo/Mary Altaffer)

(AP) ? After days of seeming to take a looming superstorm in stride, New Yorkers scrambled to gather supplies and get out of the way as forecasters warned that a wall of water could hit the nation's largest city.

Facing a seawater surge of anywhere from 6 to 11 feet, the city shut down its mass transit system, closed its schools and ordered hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes Sunday. Some New Yorkers packed grocery stores for water and food and scrambled to get out of flood zones, while others insisted they weren't going anywhere.

Clutching a white pillow in her left hand and two computers in another, Alyssa Marks rushed to get to the subway before it stopped running Sunday evening. She'd gotten cash but had no time to get toiletries and water.

"I'm nervous, but I'm also excited," she said as she left her apartment in a lower Manhattan evacuation zone for a friend's place on higher ground.

Ralph Gorham watched the sea get rough, but he planned to weather the storm at the Red Hook Lobster Pound, the seafood business he co-owns in a low-lying part of Brooklyn.

"I'm not leaving. My house is here. My business is here," he said. "When the bell tolls, you live with it."

Warnings about the megastorm ? a predicted combination of Hurricane Sandy, a wintry system moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic ? took on a much more ominous tone Sunday. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's environmental protection chief Louis Uccellini called the projected storm surge "the worst-case scenario" for New York City, Long Island and northern New Jersey.

It threatened to swamp parts of lower Manhattan, flood subway tunnels and knock out the underground network of power, phone and high-speed Internet lines that are the lifeblood of America's financial capital.

The New York Stock Exchange and other U.S. financial markets are shutting down Monday as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the nation's largest city.

The NYSE's parent company said late Sunday that the shutdown might be extended through Tuesday "pending confirmation," according to exchange operator NYSE Euronext.

"If you don't evacuate, you're not just putting your own life in danger ? you are also endangering the lives of our first responders who may have to come in and rescue you," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference Sunday as he announced a mandatory evacuation affecting 375,000 people in low-lying areas from the beaches of Queens to the glassy high-rises of Battery Park City. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo deployed National Guard troops to the city and Long Island. Consolidated Edison weighed the possibility of shutting down power in parts of lower Manhattan to protect equipment. Broadway shows were canceled for Sunday and Monday. One small hospital was being evacuated, while several others were moving patients to higher floors.

America's biggest public school system, which serves 1.1 million students, was ordered closed Monday, while many of the schools opened Sunday as emergency shelters.

It marked the second time in 14 months that New York City has faced a scenario forecasters have long feared: a big hurricane hitting the city or a bit south, such that the cyclone's counterclockwise winds drive water into miles of densely populated shoreline.

Hurricane Irene ultimately came ashore as a tropical storm in Coney Island, with a four-foot storm surge that washed over parts of the southern tip of Manhattan but didn't wreak the havoc that officials had feared, although it caused tremendous damage elsewhere. Some experts have said that a surge three feet higher could have caused huge damage in the city.

The deluge from the approaching superstorm may well be worse than Irene's ? and longer lasting, forecasters said. Bloomberg warned of damaging flooding from high tide Sunday night into Tuesday afternoon.

With the worst of the surge expected Monday night, the key factor is whether it coincides with high tide, said Klaus Jacob, a Columbia University researcher who has advised the city on coastal risks. But in any case, he said he expected the subway system to be at least partially flooded.

"I do not think that there's enough emergency measures that will help prevent the subway from flooding," Jacob said.

Randall Ross, a rare bookseller from Shreveport, La., was waiting for an Amtrak train at 1:15 p.m. Sunday to Syracuse, where he'd had no intention of going after several days of vacation in New York City.

"But getting out of New York City on a plane is a no-win situation," he said, adding he and Mary McCombs, vacationing with him, tried booking through eight different cities "and there was nothing."

The couple had spent hours online and on the phone Saturday night and Sunday morning trying to get back home but they were unable to do so.

"We brainstormed, and finally decided on Amtrak to Syracuse," he said.

McCombs has friends in Syracuse with whom they'll stay till they get a flight from there.

Bloomberg announced evacuations at about 11:30 a.m., telling people to be out just 7? hours later. By 7 p.m., subways and buses were shut down, leaving more than 5 million mostly carless daily riders on their own to get to higher ground.

For those who refused to leave, they mayor had a message.

"They won't be arrested. But I would argue they are being very selfish," Bloomberg said, noting rescue crews will still try to help them if they are flooded. "We aren't going to leave them to die. We are going to save them."

Researchers identify genetic basis of cardiac, craniofacial birth defects

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

A group of researchers in Israel, the United States and other nations have made important advances in the rapidly-expanding field of "regenerative medicine," outlining for the first time connections in genetic regulation that normally prevent birth defects in heart and facial muscles.

Some of these problems are surprisingly common ? about 1 percent of all people have a congenital heart defect. This basic research will provide a road map to ultimately allow scientists to grow the cell types needed to repair such defects, from stem cells that can be generated from a person's own body.

The findings were published online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Advances in regenerative medicine and developmental biology can now happen because we no longer require human embryos to generate stem cells," said Chrissa Kioussi, a co-author on the study and associate professor in the College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University. "The Nobel Prize this year was awarded to people who discovered how to make stem cells from adult biopsies."

Patient-derived stem cells can in principle be turned into any needed cell type, Kioussi said. The key is understanding the exact regulatory process than tells cells what type they are supposed to turn into, she said, such as a cell on the outside of the left ventricle of the heart.

"Once we understand these genetic controls in sufficient detail, we can not only turn a skin cell into a stem cell, but also turn that stem cell into the type needed for the patient to recover," Kioussi said. "We may eventually be able to grow replacement organs from the patient's cells."

In this study, researchers identified four specific "transcription factor" genes that control processes related to heart and head muscle formation. When there are defects in this process, the result can be death or a range of debilitating problems, from cleft palate to facial malformations and defective heart valves.

"There are about 20,000 genes in the human genome, but only 2,000 of the genes describe transcription factors," Kioussi said. "These transcription factors control the output of genes, the genetic machinery. They collectively determine which of the 20,000 possible molecular machines is actually deployed in each particular cell type."

Scientists have found that these transcription factors don't work alone to define cell types in mammalian development ? they function in small, self-stabilizing combinations of at least two or three.

The process moves rapidly after conception, and within one month most of the cells in the body "know" their cell type, based on the precise combination of transcription factors produced within them. When researchers understand how these stable transcription factor combinations get generated, they will know how to artificially generate these combinations in stem cells to convert them into the needed cell types.

Mammalian embryonic development is a process of self construction, a series of transitions of "temporary" cell types on the way to adult cell types. A fertilized egg is essentially a stem cell with the potential to become any other cell type. At each intermediate stage, the "temporary" cell types become more restricted in what they can become, until they ultimately achieve and maintain the adult type.

"In this work and in regenerative medicine, we care a great deal about all of these steps of cell differentiation," Kioussi said. "If you know all the steps it takes to get from here to there, you can identify what went wrong and find ways to fix it. This is being done already with some disease problems, and this work will move us closer to being able to repair heart and craniofacial defects."

The task is complex, Kioussi said, but very possible. Although there are 100 trillion cells in the human body, there are only about 100 adult cell types. Understanding and influencing the genetic specification of those cell types is possible and will probably revolutionize the treatment of many defects and diseases, Kioussi said.

This work was supported by the European Research Council, the Israel Science Foundation, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and other agencies. The lead author was Eldad Tzahor at the Weizman Institute of Science in Israel, and other collaborators were from universities and agencies in the United Kingdom, India and Spain.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Stock ...

Many stocks are at record low costs and are ready for the picking, making it one of the greatest times to speculate in decades.

With the recession practically now formally over and grinding down to a halt, the recovery period starts. In particular, here is the correct way to treble your investments overnite with an automatic stock trading program. To distinguish between which stocks have utterly bottomed out and which continue to fall, you ought to use an automatic stock market dealing system which is specially engineered to use deductive, algorithmic tools to interpret market information and find rewarding trading possibilities. I like to say that penny stocks and shares and trading robots were made for one another, and it is just for this very reason like it can discern the good picks from the bad, you can make a great amount of money in the near term. Look for a full refund guarantee because this is both an indication of good faith from the publisher and proof that they are pushing a credible programme, but also at the exact same time you can test the programme first hand before totally committing to it.

It?s simple enough to do because you do not have to invest any money, instead you can doublecheck the performances of the picks which it generates for you in the market to find out how well they do so you can know regardless of whether you should be making an investment in its next string of picks. Bill lost half his trading account in a case of days. Those untroubled days were now days crammed with stress and frantic feelings. He continued to trade and as he was trading under duress, far more losses were amassing. Perching in front of his PC screen was now a pain and he probably did that most of the day as he observed the market ?fire it?s bullets. ? The knot in his stomach and the tightness in his chest, recurring companions. Focus upon learning investing methodologies which will enable you to attain your monetary goals.

Newb securities trading may be an enjoyable experience for you, if you don't forget to learn all you can about the stockmarket before you invest. If you're greedy and intolerably aspiring at the beginning, you'll potentially be disappointed in your results. Stay informed and recent on the newest market stories.

I?m having a hard time staying in the moment and staying healthy and not just quitting. Quitting ?recovery?? That sounds weird but it seems right. Just quit, stop trying. It?s hard!!! Especially right now with all this stress and her being in so much pain and there is nothing I can do. I was studying for a test earlier and woke up with my face in my book, I didn?t even realize I was that tired. Every time I get in my car I get a stomach ache really bad and I feel sick and irritable. Like I posted a couple nights ago I want to SI, the kind of urge that is intense and won?t budge! It?s driving me crazy and I just want to do it to stop the thoughts and the urge. Sometimes it feels physical, like an exciting sensation. Exciting all over and in big waves and then it?s not exciting all, it?s longing and I miss it. I went through the whole ritual yesterday, from hiding away in private to cleaning to holding the tool to my skin. I didn?t plan on going through with it, I just missed it and so I went that far. Then I got that tingling good exciting feeling inside and then I got scared I?d really do it then I put it away. What is going on :( I?m doing this to myself and now I feel ashamed and stupid because I let myself do that and feel good for a second. REALLY good and I liked it and I feel alone and uncomfortable and stressed out and scared and I am not feeling hopeful. I want to be comforted :(

Fisker continues to wow international automotive community | Hiero ...

Anaheim-based luxury hybrid auto manufacturer Fisker Automotive has been recognized with four more international auto design and technology awards for its flagship vehicle, the Fisker Karma, adding to its growing list of tributes from the global automotive community.

?These latest awards for the Fisker Karma rightly recognize both the stunning design and technological innovation that this car has brought to the market. We truly are bringing customers tomorrow?s car today,? said Fisker Automotive CEO Tony Posawatz.

The Fisker Karma this week was presented with Fast Company Magazine?s Innovation by Design award in the Transportation category, beating out nominees that included the Boeing 787 airliner, the Faraday Bike and Ford Fusion. A panel of independent judges comprised of executives from major US brands and companies, including Nike and PepsiCo, evaluated the awards, presented in New York this week.

Also awarded this week was the Golden Steering Wheel Award by Germany?s Auto Bild Magazine, naming the Karma as the ?Classic Car of the Future? in the limousine category. The publication?s readers vote on the very prestigious honor in the home country of world-class performance automotive manufacturing.

Fisker cofounders Henrik Fisker and Barney Koehler traveler to Germany to accept the Auto Bild award. ?As the only non-German car to win an award tonight, in the heartland of BMW, Porsche, Mercedes and Audi, we are extremely proud to be considered in such high esteem, just months after bringing our new brand to this very competitive European market,? said Henrik Fisker.

Continuing the theme of modern-era autos anticipated to be recognized as classics by future generations, Motor Trend Magazine nominated the Karma as one of its Top 10 Future Classics. The list recognizes a car?s significance in the industry, rarity and purity of design.

?The Karma is significant to Fisker and the automotive industry as the Karma is not only the first vehicle Fisker has ever built, but it?s also the first luxury extended-range electric vehicle?the Karma is a striking vehicle automobile to look at, and it?ll likely look just as good as it does today, 20 or 30 years from now,? said Motor Trend.

The fourth honor comes from Sweden, home of progressive thinking. The Karma was voted Auto Motor Und Sport Magazine?s 2012 Environmental Car of the Year for its fuel-saving hybrid design. The magazine praised the Karma?s ability to combine desirability and environmentally sustainable design. Editors also noted the car?s handling, smooth acceleration and near-silent all-electric ?stealth? mode.

These four newest accolades add to Fisker?s expanding trophy case, along with previous recognitions including BBC Top Gear Magazine?s Luxury Car of the Year nod and Automobile Magazine?s Design of the Year Award.

Autism early intervention found to normalize brain activity in children as young as 18 months

Autism early intervention found to normalize brain activity in children as young as 18 months

Monday, October 29, 2012

An intensive early intervention therapy that is effective for improving cognition and language skills among very young children with autism also normalizes their brain activity, decreases their autism symptoms and improves their social skills, a nationwide study has found. The researchers said the study is the first to demonstrate that an autism early intervention program can normalize brain activity.

"We know that infant brains are quite malleable and previously demonstrated that this therapy capitalizes on the potential of learning that an infant brain has in order to limit autism's deleterious effects," said study author Sally Rogers, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and a researcher with the UC Davis MIND Institute.

"The findings on improved behavioral outcomes and the ability to normalize brain activity associated with social activities signify that there is tremendous potential for the brains of children with autism to develop and grow more normally," Rogers said.

Published online today in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, the randomized, case-controlled, multi-centered study titled "Early behavioral intervention is associated with normalized brain activity in young children with autism," found that the children who received the intervention exhibited greater brain activation when viewing faces rather than objects, a response that was typical of the normal children in the study, and the opposite of the children with autism who received other intervention.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 88 children born today will be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Hallmarks of the neurodevelopmental condition include persistent deficits in social communication and relatedness, and repetitive or restrictive patterns of interest that appear in early childhood and impair everyday functioning.

Named the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), the intervention method was developed by Rogers and Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer of the research and advocacy organization Autism Speaks. The therapy fuses a play-based, developmental, relationship-based approach and the teaching methods of applied behavioral analysis.

"This may be the first demonstration that a behavioral intervention for autism is associated with changes in brain function as well as positive changes in behavior," said Thomas R. Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, which funded the study. "By studying changes in the neural response to faces, Dawson and her colleagues have identified a new target and a potential biomarker that can guide treatment development."

For the present study, the researchers recruited 48 diverse male and female children diagnosed with autism between 18 and 30 months in Sacramento, Calif., and in Seattle, as well as typically developing case controls. The ratio of male-to-female participants was more than 3-to-1. Autism is five times more common among boys than girls.

Approximately half of the children with autism were randomly assigned to receive the ESDM intervention for over two years. The participants received ESDM therapy for 20 hours each week, and their parents also were trained to deliver the treatment, a core feature of the intervention. The other participants with autism received similar amounts of various community-based interventions as well as evaluations, referrals, resource manuals and other reading materials.

At the study's conclusion, the participants' brain activity was assessed using electroencephalograms (EEGs) that measured brain activation while viewing social stimuli -- faces -- and non-social stimuli -- toys. Earlier studies have found that typical infants and young children show increased brain activity when viewing social stimuli rather than objects, while children with autism show the opposite pattern.

Twice as many of the children who received the ESDM intervention showed greater brain activation when viewing faces rather than when viewing objects -- a demonstration of normalized brain activity. Eleven of the 15 children who received the ESDM intervention, 73 percent, showed more brain activation when viewing faces than toys. Similarly, 12 of the 17 typically developing children, or 71 percent, showed the same pattern. But the majority -- 64 percent -- of the recipients of the community intervention showed the opposite, "autistic" pattern, i.e., greater response to toys than faces. Only 5 percent showed the brain activation of typical children.

Further, the children receiving ESDM who had greater brain activity while viewing faces also had fewer social-pragmatic problems and improved social communication, including the ability to initiate interactions, make eye contact and imitate others, said MIND Institute researcher Rogers. Use of the ESDM intervention has been shown to improve cognition, language and daily living skills. A study published in 2009 found that ESDM recipients showed more than three times as much gain in IQ and language than the recipients of community interventions.

"This is the first case-controlled study of an intensive early intervention that demonstrates both improvement of social skills and normalized brain activity resulting from intensive early intervention therapy," said Dawson, the study's lead author and professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. "Given that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all 18- and 24-month-old children be screened for autism, it is vital that we have effective therapies available for young children as soon as they are diagnosed."

"For the first time," Dawson continued, "parents and practitioners have evidence that early intervention can alter the course of brain and behavioral development in young children. It is crucial that all children with autism have access to early intervention which can promote the most positive long-term outcomes."

Rogers, Dawson and Laurie J. Vismara, also a researcher with the MIND Institute, have authored two books on the intervention. One for professionals is titled "Early Start Denver Model for Young Children with Autism: Promoting Language, Learning, and Engagement" and one for parents titled "An Early Start for Your Child with Autism: Using Everyday Activities to Help Kids Connect, Communicate, and Learn."

The ESDM intervention is available in Sacramento through the MIND Institute clinic and in a number of locations throughout the U.S. and other nations. Training in delivering the ESDM method is provided through the MIND Institute and the University of Washington.
