U2, Taylor Swift Top List Of 2011's Highest-Grossing Tours

U2's 360 Tour is the year's most profitable in the U.S. and worldwide.

U2 didn't even release an album in 2011, but that didn't stop them raking in plenty of cash.

The iconic Irish quartet topped Pollstar's list of the year's most profitable tours, as their massive 360 Tour moved an impressive 2.4 million tickets worldwide, grossing more than $230 million globally. Their North American dates — which were postponed (and subsequently rescheduled) last year as Bono recovered from back surgery — made $156 million, good enough to give them the highest-grossing tour on this continent, too.

Taylor Swift had 2011's second most-profitable North American tour, as her expansive Speak Now jaunt racked up $97.7 million at the box office. Swift's country contemporary, Kenny Chesney, came in at #3, bringing in nearly $85 million in ticket sales, followed by Lady Gaga, who, despite wrapping up the North American leg of her Monster Ball tour in April, still managed to bring in $63.7 million at the box office. Bon Jovi rounds out Pollstar's top five, grossing more than $57 million.

Kanye West and Jay-Z's Throne tour ($48 million), Lil Wayne's "I Am Still Music" trek ($44 million), Britney Spears ($38 million) and Katy Perry ($28 million) also made the Top 25 in North America.

British boy band Take That's reunion tour came in second to U2's 360 trek based on worldwide receipts, making $224 million. Bon Jovi grossed nearly $150 million worldwide, good enough for third, with tours by Swift ($104 million worldwide) and Roger Waters ($103 million) rounding out the top five.

Also making Pollstar's worldwide list were Rihanna, the Foo Fighters, Justin Bieber, Usher and the Kings of Leon.

Did you attend any of the highest-grossing tours in 2011? Let us know in the comments!

Ask Stacy: How Do I Get Started Investing? | Money Talks News

Interest rates are a double-edged sword. With the exception of credit cards, rates to borrow are extremely low. Mortgage rates, for example, are as low as they?ve been since the end of World War II. So, if you?re a borrower, it?s all good. But if you?re a saver, it?s all bad. Rates on savings accounts are so low they?re practically zero.

What?s a saver to do? Here?s a question from a reader.

Dear Stacy,
How are middle-class Americans supposed to get ahead? Wages aren?t going up, but gas and food prices are. And the money banks are paying on their savings accounts are nothing. I?d like to try other kinds of investments, like stocks, but I?m afraid of risk. Is there anything I can do that to earn more without losing money? Please tell me what to do.
- Dave

I feel your pain, Dave. Compounding your savings by earning interest is critical to getting ahead. But the interest on savings accounts is doing the same thing as wages: going nowhere.

One alternative to crappy bank interest is stocks, but stocks involve risk. And while stocks and risk have always gone hand-in-hand, today it?s even worse for at least two reasons. First, the European debt crisis could ultimately hurt our economy, and in turn, our stock market. And second, the inability of the U.S. Congress to agree on anything from debt reduction to stimulus could also have a negative impact on our economy and stock market.

Nonetheless, every saver should always have some money in investments other than risk-free bank accounts. The reason is simple. Risk-free investments rarely keep up with inflation over time. And maintaining the purchasing power of your savings by earning more than the rate of inflation is the prime directive.

For a 90-second primer on investing, watch the following news story I shot on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. We?ll continue the conversation on the other side.

To recap those tips:

  • Don?t ever put any money into stocks that you could possibly need within five years. The longer your time horizon, the lower your risk.
  • Don?t put all your eggs in one basket. If you can?t afford to own stock in at least 10 different companies, use a mutual fund or Exchange Traded Fund. That way you own a sliver of lots of different companies rather than just one or two.
  • Don?t invest in stocks all at once. Invest small amounts monthly. That way, should the market fall, you?ll have money on the sidelines to buy at lower prices.
  • To decide how much to put in stocks, here?s your rule of thumb: Subtract your age from 100 and that?s the percentage you might want to put in stocks. So if you?re 25 years old, you?d take 25 from 100 and put that amount, 75 percent, of your long-term savings into stocks. If you?re 75 years old, you?d only take that kind of risk with 25 percent of your savings. But remember, this is a rule of thumb. If you?re going to freak out when the market falls, invest less.

What should you buy?

Regular mutual funds: The idea behind mutual funds is pooling money from lots of investors to buy a large, diversified portfolio of stocks. And as I said above, it?s safer to own a sliver of a giant group of stocks than a bigger chunk of just one or two. One fund to consider is the Vanguard 500 Index fund. As the name implies, it owns the shares of 500 of the largest companies in America. The minimum investment is $3,000, but it costs nothing to buy or sell shares in the fund. There is an annual management fee, but it?s only 0.17 percent ? pretty small for a mutual fund. The fund, like the stock market overall, hasn?t done well over the last 1, 5, or 10 years. But it?s averaged better than 10 percent per year since its inception in 1976.

Once you open a mutual fund account, you can have money automatically added every month by linking it to a bank account.

ETFs: An Exchange Traded Fund, or ETF, is just a mutual fund that trades on an exchange like a stock. Here are two that allow you to get a lot of diversification: The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF invests in 3,000 U.S. stocks. As I wrote this, the cost per share was about $65, so that would be your minimum investment: 1 share.

If you?d like to invest internationally, check out the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (VXUS). This ETF is currently trading around $40 a share.

The disadvantage of an ETF is that to buy shares, you?ll need to open a brokerage account and pay a commission with every transaction. And even if you use a discount broker (I use Vanguard as my brokerage firm, but there are plenty out there) you?ll still pay at least a $5 commission every time. While that may not sound like much, if you?re only investing $100 a month, that?s 5 percent off the top. Here?s a site that has commission prices and reviews on lots of brokerage firms.

By the way, if you?re wondering why my recommendations are all Vanguard-related, rest assured that?s not because they pay me. Other than having a brokerage account there, I have no relationship with them whatsoever. I recommend them exclusively because they?re one of the lowest-cost players in the business.

Conclusion: Don?t expect miracles

I wrote this post in answer to a question regarding earning more than banks. Over time, stocks have done this. And the difference it can make on your savings is remarkable.

Let?s say you find yourself with an extra 10 bucks a day, or $300 a month. If the only thing you do is put your savings in a 1-percent money market account, after 20 years you?ll compound your way to a balance of $80,000. Nice. But if you earn 10 percent instead of 1 percent, your nest egg will increase to about $228,000. Way nicer.

I?ll end this post with the same analogy I started it with: the double-edged sword. Stocks pay more over time because they?re riskier. While they can go up, they can go down, and by a lot. They can also go sideways, which is what they?ve done for the better part of the last decade. So don?t expect instant results. Over the long-term, stocks will help conquer inflation. But over the short term, there?s no telling.

Russia scolds United States for human rights abuse (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia sought to undermine the authority of the United States as a global judge of human rights on Wednesday with Moscow's first report to detail allegations of torture, phone tapping and abuse by the U.S. government.

Criticizing the United States for double standards, Russia said President Barack Obama had failed to shut the military prison at Guantanamo Bay and accused the White House of sheltering officials and CIA operatives from prosecution.

The Foreign Ministry's report "On the situation with human rights in a host of world states," follows China's example in highlighting U.S. failings in an attempt to counter U.S. State Department criticism of domestic human rights abuses.

"The situation in the United States is far from the ideals proclaimed by Washington," Russia's foreign ministry said in a 63-page report posted on its www.mid.ru Web site. "The main unresolved problem is the odious prison in Guantanamo Bay."

"The White House and the Justice Department shelter from prosecution CIA operatives and highly placed officials who are responsible for mass and flagrant breaches of human rights," it said.

Every year since 1976, the U.S. Department of State has published a detailed report on the state of human rights in the world, often with scathing analyses of abuses in China and Russia.

Washington scolded Russia for "governmental and societal human rights problems and abuses during the year" in its report published in April.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton angered Prime Minister Vladimir Putin this month by suggesting that Russia's parliamentary elections were neither free nor fair.

Russia's counter-report is unlikely to harm ties with its former Cold War foe, though Obama's attempt to forge more friendly ties with the Kremlin has cooled since Vladimir Putin said in September he planned to run in the March presidential election.

"These kinds of human rights reports can be a useful mechanism," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

"We certainly don't regard it as interference in our internal affairs when foreign governments, individuals or organizations comment on or criticize U.S. human rights practices."

Russia also criticized European Union countries for the treatment of religious minorities and Britain in particular for breaching human rights in the wake of August's riots.

The report focused on the United States and European countries, mentioning China only once and then in passing.

Twin probes to circle moon to study gravity field

The moon has come a long way since Galileo first peered at it through a telescope. Unmanned probes have circled around it and landed on its surface. Twelve American astronauts have walked on it. And lunar rocks and soil have been hauled back from it.

Despite being well studied, Earth's closest neighbor remains an enigma.

Over the New Year's weekend, a pair of spacecraft the size of washing machines are set to enter orbit around it in the latest lunar mission. Their job is to measure the uneven gravity field and determine what lies beneath ? straight down to the core.

Since rocketing from the Florida coast in September, the near-identical Grail spacecraft have been independently traveling to their destination and will arrive 24 hours apart. Their paths are right on target that engineers recently decided not to tweak their positions.

"Both spacecraft have performed essentially flawlessly since launch, but one can never take anything for granted in this business," said mission chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The nail-biting part is yet to come. On New Year's Eve, one of the Grail probes ? short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory ? will fire its engine to slow down so that it could be captured into orbit. This move will be repeated by the other the following day.

Engineers said the chances of the probes overshooting are slim since their trajectories have been precise. Getting struck by a cosmic ray may prevent the completion of the engine burn and they won't get boosted into the right orbit.

"I know I'm going to be nervous. I'm definitely a worrywart," said project manager David Lehman of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $496 million, three-month mission.

Once in orbit, the spacecraft will spend the next two months flying in formation and chasing one another around the moon until they are about 35 miles above the surface with an average separation of 124 miles. Data collection won't begin until March.

Previous missions have attempted to measure lunar gravity with mixed success. Grail is the first mission dedicated to this goal.

As the probes circle the moon, regional changes in the lunar gravity field will cause them to speed up or slow down. This in turn will change the distance between them. Radio signals transmitted by the spacecraft will measure the slight distance gaps, allowing researchers to map the underlying gravity field.

Using the gravity information, scientists can deduce what's below or at the lunar surface such as mountains and craters and may help explain why the far side of the moon is more rugged than the side that faces Earth.

The probes are officially known as Grail-A and Grail-B. Several months ago, NASA hosted a contest inviting schools and students to submit new names. The probes will be christened with the winning names after the second orbit insertion, Zuber said.

Besides the one instrument on board, each spacecraft also carries a camera for educational purposes. Run by a company founded by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, middle school students from participating schools can choose their own lunar targets to image during the mission.

A trip to the moon is typically relatively quick. It took Apollo astronauts three days to get there. Since Grail was launched from a relatively small rocket to save on costs, the journey took 3 1/2 months.

Scientists expect the mission to yield a bounty of new information about the moon, but don't count on the U.S. sending astronauts back anytime soon. The Constellation program was canceled last year by President Barack Obama, who favors landing on an asteroid as a stepping stone to Mars.

NBA Commish Stern opens season with boos in Dallas

? NBA Commissioner David Stern opened his lockout-delayed season by hearing boos from fans.

Stern was in Dallas for the NBA finals rematch between the Mavericks and Heat, and he was on the court for the start of the Mavs' banner-raising ceremony honoring their first championship. The jeers came as soon as he started speaking, but he quickly turned them into cheers by offering his congratulations to team owner Mark Cuban.

Cuban's often contentious relationship with Stern could've been as much of a reason for the boos as the lockout, which pushed the opener from Nov. 1 to Christmas and cut the season by 16 games.

Cuban and Miami's Mickey Arison were among five owners who voted against the labor deal. Stern downplayed that, hailing the agreement as beneficial to everyone.

Ron Paul Is a Dangerous Tin Man Who Has No Heart (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Less than two weeks remain before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses. On Wednesday an Iowa State University/Gazette/KCRG poll showed Texas Rep. Ron Paul leading the GOP presidential race with 27.5 percent. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed second with 25.3 percent followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney with 17.5 percent.

Like the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, Ron Paul is seen by many as a quirky but well-meaning fellow who -- aside from having a few odd-ball ideas -- poses no real threat to the world. However, where a Tin Man in search of a heart may be seen as endearing, when a man who is vacant of heart and the capacity to feel compassion for his fellow man is determined to be the leader of the free world it becomes nothing less than dangerous.

It is said that we are known by the company we keep. Paul's 30-year friendship and frequent guest interviews by radio talk show host and rabid fellow conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his comfort in feeding the suspicious minds of the youthful Student Scholars for 9/11 Truth that Americans are responsible for 9-11 are already a matter of record. Still, where Paul's long-term preference to associate himself with people of irrational mind demonstrates a connate history of obsessive paranoia and loathing for his country, more disturbing is his utter lack of compassion for the suffering of others in the world.

As quoted by Real Clear Politics, Ron Paul believes that "all foreign aid is worthless."

Ambassador Eric Goosby, M.D., who oversees implementation of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), believes otherwise.

In his remarks during his Dec. 13 speech, in honor of Dr. David Barmes before "fellow laborers in the fight against AIDS," the United States Global AIDS Coordinator said "a Stanford University study demonstrated that over a million deaths were averted in the first 4 years of PEPFAR alone, a number we expect has at least doubled since that time."

As stated in his profile of the official PEPFAR website Goosby has "longstanding working relationships with leading multilateral organizations" like the Global Fund.

"As of December," Global Fund states on their website, their efforts "save an estimated 100,000 lives every month."

Were it left to Ron Paul, rather than funding the "worthless" efforts that save thousands of lives, America would hoard its money and simply "export maybe some principles about free markets and sound money and maybe they can produce some of their own wealth."

Paul also appears to have a cowardly closeted racist streak and, when pressed during an interview on Wednesday with CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger regarding some controversial newsletters printed in the 1980s and 1990s under his name, Paul became irritated to a point of removing his mic and walking out on the interview.

Among the many racially charged comments attributed to Paul in the publications was a 1992 statement that: "Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to pick up their welfare checks."

"I never read that stuff," Paul told Borger, oddly reminiscent of Obama's excuse reported by CNN in 2008 that - while sitting in the pew of Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years -- he never heard the rancid litany of anti America remarks escaping the pastor's mouth.

Still, the most unsettling evidence regarding the warped mind of Ron Paul was revealed -- yet widely overlooked -- by Paul himself during November's Thanksgiving Forum Debate in Des Moines, Iowa.

When the candidates were asked by pollster-moderator Frank Luntz to identify a "failure" in their life from which they learned lessons that would make them a "better president," Paul had a profoundly alarming answer.

"To find one thing where I really goofed it or I had to suffer through it," Paul explained, "it's almost arrogant to think I can't find any one thing."

In other words -- aside from such "incidental" things as hating to watch himself on T.V. because all he can see are his "imperfections" and his lament in losing what he believed was his potential during his teenaged years in having "pretty darn good career in athletics, particularly in track and maybe football and maybe even baseball," were it not for "some severe injuries" - Paul truly believes that he is otherwise perfect.

When someone who has lived for nearly 70 years can say with absolute conviction that they've not made a single mistake it is safe for others to label them as certifiably delusional. For others to place someone with that level of specious conceit in the White House is nothing less than dangerous.

'Anonymous' hackers target US security think tank (AP)

LONDON ? The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple Inc. to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos. The company's main website was down, with a banner saying the "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, however, with the main threat posed to individual employees who had subscribed.

"Not so private and secret anymore?" Anonymous taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it had already posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit card details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Fred Burton, Stratfor's vice president of intelligence, said the company had reported the intrusion to law enforcement and was working with them on the investigation.

Stratfor has protections in place meant to prevent such attacks, he said.

"But I think the hackers live in this kind of world where once they fixate on you or try to attack you it's extraordinarily difficult to defend against," Burton said.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with names, phone numbers, emails, addresses and credit card account details.

"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the `A's," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

The attack is "just another in a massive string of breaches we've seen this year and in years past," said Josh Shaul, chief technology officer of Application Security Inc., a New York-based provider of database security software.

Still, companies that shared secret information with Stratfor in order to obtain threat assessments might worry that the information is among the 200 gigabytes of data that Anonymous claims to have stolen, he said.

"If an attacker is walking away with that much email, there might be some very juicy bits of information that they have," Shaul said.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.

"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.

Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.

Anonymous also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.

"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.

One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.

Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.

"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.

"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told The Associated Press in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think `Why me?' I am not rich."

But the breach doesn't necessarily pose a risk to owners of the credit cards. A card user who suspects fraudulent activity on his or her card can contact the credit card company to dispute the charge.

Stratfor said in an email to members, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman and passed on to AP by subscribers, that it had hired a "leading identity theft protection and monitoring service" on behalf of the Stratfor members affected by the attack. The company said it will send another email on services for affected members by Wednesday.

Stratfor acknowledged that an "unauthorized party" had revealed personal information and credit card data of some of its members.

The company had sent another email to subscribers earlier in the day saying it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" News ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.

It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on credit card companies Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc., eBay Inc.'s PayPal, as well as other groups in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

Investors learn lessons in '11 on hot stocks, IPOs

To paraphrase Yogi Berra, it's tough for investors to make predictions, especially about the future.

That was certainly the case in 2011 for investors whose portfolios were hurt by unforeseen developments ? from Libya to Japan to Europe to Washington.

Here are some investing lessons from this year:

? DON'T COUNT OUT TREASURYS

Did you follow the lead of star bond investor Bill Gross of PIMCO and dump Treasurys because the outlook was bad good for U.S. debt? Oops. You lost out on good returns.

Treasury prices rose sharply starting in February as the weaker U.S. economy and Europe's debt crisis sent investors looking for safe investments. Yields on bonds move in the opposite direction from their price. The strong demand for U.S. debt sent the yield on the 10-year Treasury to a record low of 1.71 percent in September. It was 2 percent Friday.

How to explain bonds' unusual staying power for investors? Safety trumps all, says Gary Thayer, chief macro strategist for Wells Fargo Advisors in St. Louis.

"During uncertain times, investors are willing to accept a low rate and worry about what rates will be for the long term later," he says.

? NETFLIX IS NOT NIRVANA

Be careful with hot stocks -- you can get burned. Netflix Inc. (NFLX) lost nearly 80 percent of its value the second half of the year. That was after it rose nearly 400 percent in 18 months. It peaked at $304.79 in July before plunging as low as $62 this month. Another soaring growth stock, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (GMCR), lost two-thirds of its value in eight weeks after nearly quadrupling from January to September. Both stocks fell on negative news about the companies.

? GOLD ISN'T SUCH A SAFE HARBOR

The price of gold reached a record $1,891.90 an ounce in August. At that point, it was up 33 percent for the year. Many investors believed gold was a safe place for their money. But speculative buying played a big role in its rise, and that left gold vulnerable to a sell-off. And sure enough, by Sept. 29, it had fallen 15 percent from its high to $1,608.50. It's still up 13 percent for the year. It closed Friday at $1,604.70.

? INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENTS CAN IMPLODE.

Many investors ignored warning signs about Europe a year ago. That came back to bite anyone who was heavily into European or international stocks. The Vanguard European Stock Index Fund (VEURX) lost 30 percent of its value between April and late September as the sovereign debt crisis boiled over. And international stocks overall, as measured by the Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund (VGTSX), fell nearly as much during the same period ? 25 percent. Both are down double-digit percentages for the year.

That doesn't mean you should ignore international stocks entirely in your portfolio. If you have an investing horizon of five to 10 years, this might be a great time to go into them.

"International diversity is important in the long term," says Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist for the Janney Montgomery Scott investment firm in Philadelphia. It's just that following the prescription without caution hurt in 2011.

? IPOs ARE A GAMBLE.

It's wise to avoid a stock that has just gone public unless you're fortunate enough to buy at the offer price (before it hits the open market). This year's initial public offerings showed again that new stocks tend to soar on Day One, buoyed by all those who got in early, and then stall. Several stocks that enjoyed a big first-day "pop" in 2011 are now back below their offering prices.

?Groupon Inc. (GRPN): First day, up 31 percent. Since then, down 13 percent.

?LinkedIn Corp. (LNKD): First day, up 109 percent. Since then, down 32 percent.

?Pandora Media Inc. (P): First day, up 9 percent. Since then, down 43 percent.

?Zillow Inc. (Z): First day, up 79 percent. Since then, down 36 percent.

Will Your Church Be Open on Christmas?

Every few years Christmas is on a Sunday and suddenly believers face a dilemma: Stay home hanging stockings and opening gifts, or upend those cherished domestic traditions and go to Sunday church services. That is, if their church is even open.

Nearly 10% of Protestant churches will be closed on Christmas Sunday this year, according to LifeWay Research, and most pastors who are opening up say they expect far fewer people than on other Sundays. Other reports suggest that churches across the board are scaling down their services in anticipation of fewer worshipers.

Irsay says healthy Manning will stay with Colts

By MICHAEL MAROT

updated 8:27 p.m. ET Dec. 22, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS - It doesn't look as if Peyton Manning will go anywhere next season -- unless he's not healthy.

On Thursday, Colts owner Jim Irsay told NFL Network he couldn't foresee a scenario in which Manning would play anywhere but Indianapolis unless he can't play at all.

Manning his missed the entire season and has not participated in full team practices since having the third and most invasive surgery on his neck Sept. 8.

"I think the situation is if he's back and he's healthy, I see him coming back and playing here," Irsay said in a 10-minute interview before the game with Houston began. "I think the hope is that his health is in the position where he could return again. That remains uncertain and that's something that's first and foremost on my mind."

The signs are encouraging.

On Dec. 1, surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins issued a statement saying the fusion between two vertebrae had healed firmly and that Manning could increase the intensity of his workouts.

Last Wednesday, for the first time since having the surgery, Manning put on pads and a helmet and threw with teammates. He took snaps from center Jeff Saturday and worked with running back Joseph Addai, receiver Anthony Gonzalez and an unnamed receiver from the practice squad.

Colts vice chairman Bill Polian and coach Jim Caldwell both watched the session. Polian and Addai have given Manning good reviews.

Manning was inactive Thursday night and has already been ruled out of next week's season-finale at Jacksonville. Caldwell also said this week that Manning would continue to do individual work but would not participate in team work the rest of the season.

The only four-time MVP in league history also is due a $28 million bonus in early March -- a prospect that had some thinking Thursday night could be the final time Manning would be on the home team's sideline at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Irsay said that's not the case.

"I don't see that being an issue," Irsay said. "I paid him $26 million this season and he didn't play and I knew it was an iffy situation. If he's healthy and he can play, he'll be back here."

Irsay also said the Colts would take a quarterback, Manning's successor, if the right one is available in April's draft. The Colts (1-13) are the front-runners for the No. 1 overall pick, a slot that most analysts believe will be filled by Stanford's Andrew Luck. Another possible candidate, Southern California's Matt Barkley said Thursday that he would return to school for his senior season.

And when the season ends, Irsay acknowledged there would be plenty to evaluate -- from the top down.

"I'm concerned we came out and lost 13 games," Irsay said. "We certainly were looking to do better. In terms of evaluating things, I think you have to look at the Texans. Last year, their coach was under great fire, Bob McNair stuck with him and now he's very popular in Houston. So when the season ends, I will evaluate everything. You know I love continuity."

Where's the spectrum? This map will show you

We'll admit, trying to decipher wireless spectrum can be a frustrating and exhausting process. Who owns what, and where? Fortunately, Anthony Fiti of Spectrum Omega has put together a Rosetta Stone Google Map indicating how much spectrum each carrier owns in the lower 48 states, the frequencies they own and where it's all located. While it's by no means 100 percent accurate due to various complexities in how some spectrum is shared between carriers, and there's no promise of it being continually updated yet, it's still the most comprehensive visual guide we've seen outside of the FCC site. If you're curious as to who's got the spectrum in your neck of the woods, take a peek at the source link below and have a look around.

[Thanks, Jeff]

Casey Anthony sued for defamation

The man who found 2-year-old Caylee Anthony's body in 2008 is suing her mother for damages, saying Casey Anthony defamed him during her murder trial earlier this year.

Former meter reader Roy Kronk said in a lawsuit filed in Florida on Wednesday that 25-year-old Anthony and her lawyers tried to shift suspicion away from the young mother and on to him.

Kronk testified he found Caylee's body in the woods near Anthony's home and called police. Casey Anthony was charged with killing her daughter, but a jury acquitted her in July.

In the suit, Kronk claims the defense variously accused him of involvement in Caylee's death. He said lawyers described him as a killer, a child snatcher and morally bankrupt, and accused him of finding and keeping Caylee's body and then placing the remains where they were found.

But defense attorney Jose Baez also told jurors Caylee accidentally drowned in the family's backyard pool. If that was true, then Anthony and her lawyers knew their statements about Kronk were false, according to his complaint.

Kronk also has sued the National Enquirer tabloid newspaper and bounty hunter Leonard Padilla for defamation.

In a motion to dismiss, the Enquirer claims its article accurately reported Anthony's attempt to blame Kronk and was based on documents filed in court records by her lawyers.

Padilla, who once bailed Anthony out of jail prior to her trial, contends in court records that anything he said about Kronk was opinion and related to a matter of public concern.

Kronk's suit against Anthony is the third she faces in Florida.

She is being sued for defamation by a woman named Zenaida Gonzalez, who claims her life was ruined when Anthony initially told investigators Caylee was kidnapped by a nanny of the same name.

Anthony also is being sued for damages by Texas EquuSearch, a nonprofit group, for expenses incurred during the five-month search for Caylee.

Also on Wednesday, a lawyer for Anthony filed a motion asking that a prosecutor be held in contempt of court for revealing details of her psychiatric evaluations in his new book about the case.

Jeff Ashton, who retired after Anthony's trial, published details from the depositions of two psychiatrists in his book, "Imperfect Justice." The doctors said Anthony claimed she had been molested by her father and her father had drowned Caylee.

Judge Belvin Perry sealed the depositions from public view before the trial began because the allegations were so sensational, according to Ashton, and Anthony's lawyers never called the psychiatrists as witnesses at trial.

Ashton could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

Cesaria Evora Dead: 'Barefoot Diva,' Grammy-Award Winning Singer From Cape Verde, Dies At Age 70

LISBON, Portugal ? Cesaria Evora, who started singing as a teenager in the bayside bars of Cape Verde in the 1950s and won a Grammy in 2003 after she took her African islands music to stages across the world, died Saturday. She was 70.

Evora, known as the "Barefoot Diva" because she always performed without shoes, died in the Baptista de Sousa Hospital in Mindelo, on her native island of Sao Vicente in Cape Verde, her label Lusafrica said in a statement on its website. It gave no further details.

Evora retired in September because of health problems. In recent years she had had several operations, including open-heart surgery last year.

She sang the traditional music of the Cape Verde Islands off West Africa, a former Portuguese colony. She mostly sang in the version of creole spoken there, but even audiences who couldn't understand the lyrics were moved by her stirring renditions, her unpretentious manner and the music's infectious beat.

Her singing style brought comparisons to American jazz singer Billie Holiday. "She belongs to the aristocracy of bar singers," French newspaper Le Monde said in 1991, adding that Evora had "a voice to melt the soul."

Evora's international fame came late in life. Her 1988 album "La Diva Aux Pieds Nus" ("Barefoot Diva"), recorded in France where she first found popularity, launched her international career.

Her 1995 album "Cesaria" was released in more than a dozen countries and brought her first Grammy nomination, leading to a tour of major concert halls around the world and album sales in the millions.

She won a Grammy in the World Music category of the 2003 awards for her album "Voz D'Amor".

Evora, known to her close friends as Cize (pronounced see-ZEH), was the best-known performer of "morna," Cape Verde's national music. It is a complex, soulful sound, mixing an array of influences arising from the African and seafaring traditions of the 10 volcanic islands.

Evora was born Aug. 27, 1941, and grew up in Mindelo, a port city of 47,000 people on the island of Sao Vicente, where sailors from Europe, America, Africa and Asia mingled in what was a lively cosmopolitan town with a fabled nightlife.

The local musical style borrowed from those cultures, defying attempts to classify it.

"Our music is a lot of things," Evora told The Associated Press in a 2000 interview at her home. "Some say it's like the blues, or jazz. Others says it's like Brazilian or African music, but no one really knows. Not even the old ones."

Evora was 7 years old when her father died, leaving a widow and seven children. At 10, with her mother unable to make ends meet, she was placed in an orphanage.

"I didn't like it. I value my freedom," she told the AP.

At 16, when Evora was doing piecework as a seamstress, a friend persuaded her to sing in one of the many sailors' taverns in her town. As her popularity grew, she was also rowed out into the bay to sing on anchored ships.

She received no pay ? just free drinks. She used to smile when she recalled her fame as a heavy cognac drinker. And she sadly recalled the exact day ? Dec. 15, 1994 ? she had to give up drinking for her health's sake.

Evora didn't think much of her international stardom and she went back to Mindelo whenever she could. She rebuilt her childhood home, turning it into a 10-bedroom house where friends and family often stayed over, and she always made sure she was home for Christmas.

A heavy smoker for decades, Evora was diagnosed with heart problems in 2005. She suffered strokes in 2008 and in September 2011, when she announced she was retiring.

She had a son and a daughter by different men but never married. Family details were not immediately available.

Delhi's air as dirty as ever despite some reforms (AP)

NEW DELHI ? A decade ago, plans for a metro and clean-fuel buses were hailed as New Delhi's answer to pollution. But air in the Indian capital is as dirty as ever ? partly because breakneck development has brought skyrocketing use of cars.

Citywide pollution sensors routinely register levels of small airborne particles at two or sometimes three times its own sanctioned level for residential areas, putting New Delhi up with Beijing, Cairo and Mexico City at the top of indexes listing the world's most-polluted capitals.

Sunrises in India's capital filter through near-opaque haze, scenic panoramas feature ribbons of brown air and everywhere, it seems, someone is coughing.

"My family is very worried. Earlier, the smoke and dust stayed outside, but now it comes into the house," said 61-year-old shopkeeper Hans Raj Wadhawan, a one-time smoker now being treated for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the Delhi Heart and Lung Institute.

"I can see the air is bad again, and I can feel it in my chest."

New Delhi could lay some of the blame on its own success. Its recently minted middle class adds 1,200 cars a day to the 6 million on roads already snarled with incessantly honking traffic. Generous diesel subsidies promote the use of diesel-powered SUVs that belch some of the highest levels of carcinogenic particles, thanks to their reliance on one of the dirtiest-burning fuels and low Indian emissions standards.

"The city has lost nearly all of the gains it made in 2004 and 2005," said Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director of research at the Delhi-based Center for Science and Environment.

New Delhi has undergone head-spinning expansion as Indian economic reforms in the 1990s ushered in two decades of record growth. Once a manageable capital of 9.4 million where cows, bicycles and bullock carts ruled the road, New Delhi today is a gridlocked metropolis and migrant mecca now home to 16 million. Authorities have scrambled to deal with everything from rocketing real estate prices to overflowing garbage dumps.

Efforts to clean the air, it seems, have only just begun.

The capital saw some success after a 1998-2003 program removing power plants from the city center and adopting compressed natural gas, CNG, for running buses and rickshaws. The buses had run on diesel, and the rickshaws on gasoline and highly polluting kerosene. Of all possible fuels, CNG releases the smallest amounts of particulate matter.

But just a few years later pollution levels are back up, with levels of airborne particles smaller than 10 micrometers ? called PM10s ? often near 300 per cubic meter, three times the city's legal limit of 100 ? and well above the World Health Organization's recommended limit of 20.

The tiny particulate matter, sometimes called black carbon or soot, is small enough to lodge in people's lungs and fester over time. WHO says the stuff kills some 1.34 million people globally each year.

Studies on the Indian capital put the number of such deaths in the thousands.

It worsens in the dry winters, as winds die down and pollution pools over the Delhi plains. Vehicular smog mixes with smoke from festival-season fireworks as well as countless illegal pyres of garbage burned by homeless migrants to stay warm as temperatures near freezing. And the booming construction scene, free for a few months from monsoons, sends up clouds of dust.

"Our biggest challenge is the vehicles, but building roads is not the answer," Roychowdhury said. "We badly need second-generation action to restrain this increasing auto dependence."

But so far India's diesel subsidies, billed as aid for poor rural farmers who need the fuel for generators and tractors, have only boosted its market for vehicles, and the worst-polluting kind.

Diesel cars, which in 2000 accounted for 4 percent of India's market, now make up 40 of new car sales, and are soon expected to hit 50 percent.

It's an odd automotive trend for today's world. In the United States, where markets set fuel prices, the popularity of diesel is nearly naught. China taxes diesel and petrol fuels at the same rate, while neighboring Sri Lanka sets high duties on diesel cars.

Indian car owners now spend more on diesel than the agricultural sector and benefit from 100 billion rupees, or about $1.86 billion, in direct diesel subsidy, according to the Center for Science and Environment.

Environmentalists call the diesel policy an incentive to pollute. And with the capital's 16 million residents now living on some of the world's most lung-challenging air, city authorities seem to agree and say more action is needed to clean up the air.

The city recently proposed a raft of reforms to bring down PM10 levels by boosting public transportation and discouraging drivers from taking out their cars. Ideas floated include taxing diesel vehicles, increasing parking rates that are now lower than bus fares, and introducing a London-like congestion charge for driving in the city center.

Delhi also is expanding its metro, and wants to auction off its 17 bus routes to replace a chaotic system that has dozens of single owner-operators working independently ? and inefficiently.

But whether the changes are made, and how effective they would be in persuading people to give up their cars, remains to be seen.

In the meantime, at least 3,000 Delhi residents will die each year from pollution-related causes, out of the city's 100,000 annual deaths, according to a recent study by The Energy Resources Institute in New Delhi and the U.S.-based health Effects Institute. Other studies have put the number of pollution-related deaths at 10,000 a year or higher.

Thousands more will develop asthma, chronic bronchitis or other respiratory ailments.

Unsurprisingly, most patients and victims live near the city's biggest roads.

"The number of respiratory diseases is definitely on the rise. Even in children we are finding more respiratory problems," said Dr. Vinod Khetarpal, president of the Delhi Medical Association. "With the introduction of CNG, it had come down quite drastically. But now it's back up again. Cars seem to be our new vice."
